my 4 month old boy (huge tank, 16 lbs) sleeps 12 hours at night, and then naps 4 hours in the morning, maybe 3 hours in the afternoon, another cat nap around dinner. he sleeps a lot. he can only stay awake for ONE hour usually between those naps before getting whiney and fussy. this only started after i did the sleep training and got him to sleep more. most babies are able to stay awake for atleast an hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours. i feel like i never see this kid. is this a phase? or is this too much? he ends up only being awake during the day for a 4-5 hours tops:(

so glad I came across these posts! I was starting to wonder if my just 4 month old was sleeping too much but it seems it's quite common and normal for them to sleep a lot at this age going by you all :) hehe i'm a tad relieved lol

This is such a relief to hear. My little girl is 4 months and started sleeping through the night from 10ish till about 7 with the occasional feeding in the middle. Then I feed her around 7 and she sleeps again for 4 hours. She's only up for couple hours before she's sleepy again. She takes another 3-4 hour nap in the afternoon into evening. I hope this just means she's growing since she's a petite little thing. She's a great eater and nurses a lot while she's awake. Thanks for the reassurance.

As long as he is still gaining weight and is eating enough to have enough diapers, he is fine. He is just growing. It takes a lot of sleep to grow that fast :) My daughter went through this the last few weeks and is now staying awake longer. I got to where I would hold her in the chair while she napped just so I could see her more. I missed her.

I'm starting to think this might be normal. My son is 3 months old and he sleeps about eight hours at night and takes about the same length of naps that your little one takes. Im always asking my mom if he sleeps too much and she's constantly telling me that he's not sleeping too much and that this is normal. I have no idea though. Maybe their sleeping so much because their growing

My son sleeps for almost 10 hours every night. I was worried at first because he's only 3 months old. But he just started doing that when we started feeding him a bowl of rice and 2 once of formula, and gettig a bath afterwards. Its heaven. Enjoy it. :)

My mom-in-law is an RN and told me that the extended amount of sleep my little four month is good. This is a way for the brain to grow. I believe she is right for the fact that my little guy is becoming more alert to sounds and movements. His hand eye coordination is becoming more quick

My daughter is 15 weeks and she has been sleeping a lot more today than usual. I hope she sleeps tonight after all the sleeping she has done today. She normally sleeps 8-10 hours every night.

My little girl sleeps through the night also and naps during the day.last night she went down around 930pm and got up at 10 am in the morning I feel nervous she is sleeping tp much. I don't want to be ungrateful but also wanther to be ok. All the sites I google have to do with getting your baby to sleep and I'm worried she is sleeping to much

Yes it is a phase...& enjoy it. Get rest while he's sleeping, get cleaning done, enojoy the time. Soon enough he will b awake longer & u'll b wishing he'd take a tap, or nap longer.
My little guys (who is 10.5 mths now) was a sleeper up until he was about 8-9 mths. He started sleeping thru the nite @ bout 6 wks & same thing he would be awake 4 only a few hrs a day some days.
Do not worry bout it @ all!!

My 3 month old son sleeps from 7.30pm to 7.30am most nights but during the day I am lucky to get him to sleep for an hour after each feed. He is sound asleep and then 2 hours to the minute after his last feed he is awake wanting a feed. He too feeds, plays for about 5 minutes and then wants to sleep. I wish he would sleep a bit longer during the day so I get a chance to do some things around the house.

Our little is also a good sleeper and sleeps for nearly the same amount of time, she is nearly 4 months... she has been doing this since birth-infact all 3 of my kids have done it so I would say not to worry, enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts it won't be long before you are wishing that he still slept for that long :) lol x

My son is abouth the same. My son is 13 weeks he sleeps from 8 pm until 530 am without waking. He is usually only up for 2-2.5 hours duing the day befor needing a nap. He will nap any where from half an hour to an hour and a half. He will have one long one of about 2.5 hours in there somewhere. He gets a bath every night between 7 and 730 depending when he starts to get fussy. He then gets a bottle sometimes with cereal sometimes not. this is a routine we have followed since he was 8 weeks. It has worked so far.

This sounds normal to me. My son is just 3 months and he's sleeping almost as much. They grow as they sleep so best to leave him to it! The more he sleeps the more he'll grow :) He should grow out of it and become more active for you over the next few months. If you do want to keep him awake though keep him amused with toys and music etc. and just play and talk to him.
Hope this helps!

Courtney don't worry! I'm almost positive that he will gain a good amount of weight during this period. My little one was 7 weeks early weighing 3lbs 5oz and is now almost 14pds due to his eating and sleeping habit!

My little girl is 3 1/2 months old weights 14 lbs and sleeps 10-12 hours a night, w/o waking up to eat. She gets a 6 oz bottle of formula w/o cereal and then goes off to sleep. During the day she will take 2 or 3 cat naps for half hour to an hour and one good 2-3 hours nap in the afternoon. This sleeping pattern started a few weeks ago, but she was sleeping through the night when she was 6 weeks old. So your lo should stop sleeping so much during the day soon and when they do u will miss it :>)

I'm so glad I read these posts. I was worried the my almost 4 month old was sleeping too much. Jessica - you said your doctor said they sleep more when they go through growth spurts - that sounds right on! My boy is eating like crazy too. I hope he grows a lot during this growth spurt because he was 6 weeks early so he's just a little guy. :)

My daughter (3.5 months) is doing the same, but i'm not worried just enjoying it. As they get older they will be awake more. I've been told sleep promotes sleep and i find if she doesn't sleep during the day like she has been she is unsettled, tired and grumpy. I just feel lucky she sleeps though at night.

Yes, I think this is normal, also. My daughter is almost 4 months old and takes a nap pretty much after every feeding for 1.5-2 hours. Then, she sleeps about 10 hours at night. I remember it changing a little when my son was about 6 months old. Once they start eating more at actual meal times, they seem to stay awake a little longer at a time and nap a little less.
Hope this helps! Enjoy the sleeping! :)

For my son it's not continuous. He'll sleep from about ten to two or thee and then wake up for a bottle and then he goes back to sleep and he'll wake up around five or six to eat again

hi everyone,
sabrina, what do u mean by sleep training??
my daughter is 3 1/4 months old. she sleeps good at night, wakes up 2 times for milk. all the moms who say their kids sleep for 8-11 hrs, is it like continuous sleeping or with feeding breaks? and is it ok if so young baby sleeps for long hours continuously without feeding?

I think it may be normal. My doctor said that babies go through periods where there will sleep alot more than normal. Apparently from what I'm told is when they are having this long sleep periods is when they are having another growth spurt.

I am thinking it is normal and more of a growth stage. My son is 3 1/2 months old and he just started sleeping around 8-10 hours a night. Would be up for an hour and half or two hours and after his morning bottle takes a nap. Throughout the day though, he'll be awake for a few hours and only take 30-60 min naps. All I know is he is spoiling me with the long naps and I'm afraid he'll go back to 4-6hours a night soon and I'll be dragging.

My daughter is 3 1/2 months and weighs 15 pounds and sleeps well at night with 2 or three average naps in the day so I don't think its abnormal for him to sleep a lot and I don't think his weight has anything to do with it.

Hi guys. I know how you feel I felt the same that I was always just feeding my daughter then putting her to bed LOL. They will come out of this habbit though trust me. She nows sleeps on total for 11/12 hours at night and then has mabe 45mins nap 3/4 times during the day if that. I was worried that she was sleeping too much the same as you guys are now but its nothing to worry about at all you will soon start to see the change in them xx

My 3 month old baby girl sleeps 12 hours at night and then I wake her, I have no idea how long she would sleep if i let her keep going. I just want to make sure she eats enough too.

My son is three months and sleeps pretty much the same amount, I wouldn't worry. My older kids had the same sleep habits til about 5-6 months old.
