Are your babies all walking?

My son was a due date baby (3 May 2010) and crawled on cue at 8 months but he is still not walking and almost 16 months! He will cruise along furniture but won't stand on his own or take unassisted steps. When should I worry?

My daughter started to walk at 14.5 months :) I never worried - she did it in her own time :) She is big for her age - at 14.5 months, she was 89cm tall and weighed around 30lbs (takes after her mummy!). She also had suffered from 6 major double ear infections in the 6 months before she walked, so it is thought this affected her balance and her confidence in walking. Now, at 20 months and with grommets in both ears, she is running rings around us!! xx

Well, as long as your pediatrician doesn't see any need to worry then I think you're ok. My daughter started walking around 9months and that's cause she was one of those babies who hated laying down. They all learn at different rates. You can always practice with him and hold his hands while letting him walk. Maybe that will help him get excited about walking. :)

Good luck!

My son was walking at 11-12 months, but he was an early guy for everything. At our baby groups I notice a lot of babies his age (hes now 17months) who are still needing assistance taking steps or super wobbly. Every baby is different. If youre super worried, ask your doctor. :)

Mine started on her first birthday by holding two objects in her hand and us encouraging (only 3-4 steps) to come to us, then a few days later she walked from her daddy's hands to me all by herself and hasn't stopped since. She is 16 months old now and quite the walker, player, runner. I've read a lot of baby books and I think its perfectly fine yours isn't walking yet. Every baby is different and yours may be just thinking it through cautiously first. Our daughter, Piper certainly did, her grandfather (my dad) always said it was in her head, but she lacked confidence, and think for it was true. So, I would hold her hands and walk with her and finally when she had two small toys in her hand, she wasn't thinking too much about the act of walking and just walked over to me a few steps, that was the beginning for of walking for us.
hope this helps,

My twins were 25 weekers. Ian started walking unassisted yesterday at 15 months, 11 months adjusted. Emi is still cruising. They're both very different. Some babies develop their gross motor skills very quickly while others develop other areas first (my daughter is quicker with language and social development).

I was getting worried about my baby girl not walking or crawling yet until I read some of the comments here, she will be 12 months at the end of this month and doesn't want to crawl or anything like that yet but she does get into that position to crawl but then seems to be afraid but at least shes trying. I worried because her big sis took off walking on me at 8 months old n never looked back she skipped crawling all together but I know all babies develop differently.

She's 2 next month! I couldnt imagine her ever walking, she didn't start crawling until 10-11months either! Every child is different and I never believed people when they said 'One day she'll just do it' but she did! Out of nowhere! No need to worry yet Hun x

Thanks Amanda! That was very helpful. I had Caleb standing by the couch today with this big square toy and he stood there! Took steps from left to right because I spaced other toys out. Then I put him in his crib and up he pulled himself to standing. Now he's walking around it holding on to the bar. He even held on with one hand trying to reach the little stuffed animals on his mobile. Makes me wonder if that Pediasure had anything to do with it today LOL!

Also, it is very true that barefoot is best...however, soft soled when leaving the house. Such shoes as Robeez, they are highly recommended by Pediatrics...

My son is 14 months an is walking now but he didn't start until his 1st birthday...he didn't crawl until 10 months, from 7 - 10 months he pulled his legs behind him as if he was in combat! LOL All babies are different - don't worry if they are not walking yet at 13 months....they will very soon and when they do - you will wish they still crawled! ;) but my daughter who is now 13 years old walked at 7months and 3 weeks...so 2 children from the same mom but both walked at considerably differing ages...

@chelese crawford ..actually leaving your child bearfoot is best it lets them learn how to walk balances and is actually good for their feet muscles ....its actually best for us all to go barefoot but its just not that acceptable in society ....trust me i know about feet and how they work my boyfriend is a barefoot runner and i also studied about this in nursing aid school :)

my baby is almost 13 months old now and still wont walk. He just crawls everwhere. But he can pull himself up to standing position now on his own and doesn't need me to help him keep his balance. His dr was a little concerned but heck I didn't walk till i was 16 months old and my husband was the same. I think when they are ready they will do it. I was concerned but I just keep practicing with him. I heard buying shoes really helps. My dad keeps saying "buy that boy some shoes! That will help him!" so i'm going to JC penny after the holidays and take his advice. I bet your LO will be walking before you know it!

Hi! My first son walked (on his own) a week after his first bday whereas my second son (born on the 10th of December) walked at the age of 9 1/2 months. A paediatrician once told me that a baby will walk once he or she feels confident enough. so i wouldnt worry too much about it.

My daughter didnt start walking on her own until 15 months. I was very worried too but the doctors said to give it time and work with her and she would. I took their advice and now at 16 months she is cruising all over the place. I think it's just a matter of time, teaching and patience.

What does his dr say maybe he is focusing his attention on learning other stuff since he know how to get around. I know of a few babies that wern't walking untill they were three years old. So I would talk with his dr about it before I would start to worry.

My daugther is turning 1 next week monday (the 28th). she only stands when she wants to. if she doesn't feel like it, forget it. and, she stands on her tiptoes so her balance is very shaky. i'm thinking she's in no hurry to walk because she crawls really quickly. i guess your son will walk when he wants to. no worries there

Our daughter started walking on Thursday - she'll be 15 months old on the 3rd of December. She's never shown any interest in walking until around two weeks ago. She just let go of the table and took off! We never worried about our daughter's walking. Your son will do it in his own time :) xx

well i know a few other moms who's babies didnt start walking till about 16 or 17 months, it varies from baby to baby they are all different and develop at different stages, my son started walking at 11 months but that doesnt mean anything is wrong with your son, he will pick it up when he is ready.

My daughter took her first step at 11 months. I stood her up in the floor and she started with a few steps at a time and now she's almost running at 17 months. There is no "normal" for walking with toddlers your child will walk when there ready. Don't worry.

Somebabiesdo things early other later.... Its all normal. Me and my friend had babies 13 days apart. My son rolled at 2.5 months, crawled at 5 months, and took his first steps at 10 months... Her little one rolled at 4/5 months, crawled at 8/9 months, and furniture walking at 11 months. The doctor says both are totally on track!Just depends on the baby.

My 16month old daughter is just starting to walk, but continues to fall often and is very unsteady. I also want to say to others, that while I realize you are trying to be reassuring, "poo-pooing" someone's concerns is often the opposite of helpful. I have a daughter who is autistic and it took a long hard road to find this out and get her the right services because my concerns were often invalidated by other people's good intentions. Mom's, always trust your instincts, advocate for your children and seek the advice of "professionals" when you are concerned. :)

My GP told me at 12 months, if she's not walking by 18 months then come back, until then not to worry. She's 14 months today and she will balance, has taken about 4 steps, but is much happier crawling everywhere. My 1st walked 3 days before her 1st birthday. They are all different, your son will be fine :-)

my son started walking at 9 months old, using the table as some support - and took off on his own the day after his birthday.
Some start earlier, and some take their time. I am a firm believer that they do things when they are ready!

My Daughter crawled at 5-6 months and starting walking at 9 and 1/2 months. But in your instance i think that can be quite normal all babies develop differently and at their own pace. My sister baby who is 2 months older then my daughter started crawling at 10 months and walked at 13 months. I really wouldn't worry to much, i hope this helps :)

I would not worry as long as your gut feeling isn't sending up red flags! You have heard a million times by now that every child is different, so just trust yourself & what feels right to you.

My son was born 7 weeks premature on August 24, 2010, so I expected him to be a little behind on some things. He didn't start to crawl until her was almost a year old and just started taking his first unassisted steps in the last week or so. He is 14 months old now.
