Carseat tantrums?

Anybody have any pointers on how to defuse a carseat meltdown or keep your cool while one is happening? It seems like ever since my son figured out how to throw a tantrum he does it pretty much everytime we get into the car now. I prefer going through drive-thrus wherever I go now, and dread leaving any place because I know the impending doom of my son's fit will get the best of me and/or him. They've gotten to the point where he starts to roll out of the carseat or try to scratch me while I'm attempting to strap him in, or even knock my glasses off my head and pull my hair. What causes this? Not enough running around before we get in the car? Not wanting to leave? He doesn't seem to hate car rides, I try to keep him entertained. I feel so embarrassed when these happen and people can hear and see us struggling with each other. Anybody else going through this?

hi, so, my son started this very thing after my husband let him sit in the front seat and let him pretend to drive, just once!! DO NOT EVER let your kids do this. i have to go thru hell everytime we get in the car now, he beats me up. hes 20 months old. so now i have to bring anarsenal of things to help me thru this, because i start loosing it, sweating, he arches his back adn i cant get him in the seat. so heres waht i do. i take his bottle, and i-touch ( i reccomend everyone get an ipad or i-touch and download some dora and deigo videos) that i-touch saved my life so many car rides and restaurants. so when we get in the car and he starts flipping out i try each thing till one works. sometimes i hand him the bottle and thats it, hes drinking and i pop him into the seat. if that doesnt work, i let him stand in the back tantruming, and i put on ki-lan, or dora LOUD on the -touch he usually turns to it and i hand it to him, then while hes holding it i pop him into the seat. sometimes you have to sit back there for five min and wait it out, becasue if you just keep on pushing him in the seat while hes screaming you will get noplace! ive sat on him, held him down, it doesnt work, you need to calm them down first, give a pacifier and a fav toy then ge thim in

I know the feeling my wee girl is doing this most of time it's the stroller I think you just have to do it quick as you can most people with kids have been through this and know that the child is just testing you . Stick to your guns and let them know that hitting mummy etc... is not nice (the mad mummy voice) and yes they most likely don't want to go hope it gets better soon :-)

I swear you are writing about my daughter....I look forward to the responses. I'd also like some tips on how to make it on car trips without meltdowns. It seems like we can't make it across town without screaming.

I am so going through this with my baby girl she does pretty much everything you listed up there. I think that it is because they just don't want to leave or posibly because they know that once they are buckled in then they know they cant get out of the seat for a while. But some of the things that I have tried is if she has something in her hand that she wants like her blankiy or sippy or stuffed animal or book or what ever it is I take it from her then tell her I will give it back to her but she has to get in her seat first and I have found that that works 90% of the time. So just my addvise take what you want and leave the rest but good luck.

I'm not sure how to help. We had my son in a graco myride after he grew out of his infant car seat. He was fine in it for about 6-7 months. All of a sudden he would scream his head off, and fight and kick whenever we tried to put him in. We ended up purchasing a different car seat and has been fine ever since. I hope you can find out what is going on. It is no fun having a struggle to go somewhere.
