Is a small head circumference ok for a big boy?

My son is in the 60-65 percentile for height and weight. He's a pretty big boy but he's tall so the weight is pretty well distributed. His head circumference is in the bottom fifth percentile though., which surprises me because he looks like he has a normal size head. I'm just worried if this means anything about his intelligence or development. I know some babies have little heads but usually they're tiny all over and he's big. Thanks for any help.

the true test for a possible developmentle delay, is if your child is meeting milestones. If your dr had concerns im sure he would discuss them with you.

My daughter iis in the 55 percentile for weight and only the 25 percentile for head circumfrence but she's developing well, rolled over at 3.5 months, sat up at 5.5 months, and crawled at 6.5 months. She's a few days shy of 8 months and already pulling up on the coffee table to stand and "cruising." I think it might even be easier for her since she doesn't have a big heavy head to hold up! Haha, just kidding. I thought it sounded concerning at first but since she's doing fine I figure it's no biggie. I agree with Erin, the pediatrician probably would have said something or recomended extra tests if she thought there was something to be concerned about.

If you are concerned ask your doctor at the next visit. My guess if your doctor had a real concern they would have said something when they told you. There are so many different shapes and sizes. And what they are like as babies aren't necessarily the shape they will be when they are older.

I think watching his milestones is a better indicator if something is wrong. Even then though babies vary SO much. My daughter didn't crawl till 11 mo and walk till 15 months---but she picked it up really fast once she started. If they are behind on milestones in all areas by a couple months or if they are behind in one area by several months thats a time to look closer. There are people throught he county or school district (Early childhood staff, SLP, etc) that can help answer questions about development often for free.
