With my 1st we got what is called Bebe sounds. It's not a doppler. It megafiys the sound so you can here the heart beat. It was fun to hear our daughter's heart beat but the novelty of it wore off with our next child and we ended up selling it in a garage sale. I look forward to listening to the babies heart beat every mo. What the dr's use from what I have learned is relatively safe when they use it and it is just for a small period of time. Ultrasounds are relatively safe in moderation. Just like with anything else. I had to receive quite a few ultrasound with my 3 child cause they found a reflux in one of his kidneys and they had to monitor it closely to make sure that he wouldn't need surgery after he was born. I know of other family's that are greatful for ultrasounds cause if something is wrong with the baby in the womb and the dr's are able to detect it and correct the problem before the baby is born (if it is absolute necessary) or right after dr can generally save more babies lives. I am very thankful for ultrasounds. Ultrasound is what was used on me when I was diagnosis with breast cancer and probably is what saved my life.

Hey Amanda, just be careful, the Radiation from the dopplers is very strong, and too much can heat up the fluid around the baby, and some studies show it can cause neurological damage.
America is very much denying and ignoring the findings in other countries, but needless to say, it's good to be safe.
There's a community of women even in America who refuse to use any Doppler devices or ultrasounds because of the possible risks.
I personally am on the fence about them, but my family is very much against the risks of dopplers and ultrasounds.
So I decided to do only one Doppler a month at the drs and only one ultrasound at 18 weeks and then no continuous monitoring in labor.
Now many will say I'm crazy and a worry wort, but the articles I've found were worth considering and I'm just not ok with the risks, or been possible risks.

Ok that said, we are buying a fetoscope, which is like a stethoscope but specifically for fetus listening, it is no radiation, thus no risk.
Just ask your dr, do some research, and be aware of the fact that some moms are now refusing any Doppler use because they feel it could be harmful.

I, as I said, am not convinced they can hurt the baby, but I'm not convinced they are safe either, so I just proceed with caution!

Sorry to be such a downer, I don't mean to put a bad mood on you!
But I can't help but let you know what I found out cuz with Eric I had a bunch of ultrasounds, and continuous monitoring in labor and looking back I can see how some of the bad things that happened could be caused by those things I didn't know could do bad.

Just do some research online, and make sure you know what the opposers say, and why they are against them.
Drmomma.com is where my research started.....
