Important as our babies reach a year soon!

Hello everyone!
As our babies are approaching the one year mark, and many are around 20pounds already I want to take the time to spread the news about the new American academy of pediatrics recommendation for all babies and toddlers to ride rear facing in the car.
The reason the recommendation has changed is there is more evidence that front facing a one year old can end to their untimely death in the event of a crash. Rearfacing is 5 times safer!
Once your baby outgrows their infant seat you should buy a convertible seat that rearfaces as well as front faces and then use this seat until your child outgrows it by either height or weight.
Hopefully at least two years, but depending on the seat up to 4-5 years!
So jump on the new extended rearfacing bandwagon and do some research of your own! Look at the rash tests and see how the dummies fare both rear facing and front facing. This will be quite convincing if your on the fence!
Here's a link to the new aap recommendation. The laws haven't changed as of yet, but I hope they will follow suit and soon the law will be two years minimum!
Thanks mamas, and I hope you are enjoying the may 20011 babies group!

I am planning on keeping it rear facing for as long as I can:) I didn't turn my first son around til he was almost 18months. I plan on keeping my daughter rear facing til she is atleast 2

Some kids are longer in the legs and shorter in the body, and some the opposite. So really, it doesn't matter how long their legs are as long as their body still fits. So look at the cm limit for the seat and also watch the top of the baby's head.
In general the legs touching might mean they outgrown a capsule bucket type infant carrier seat. But really, the way to know if they've outgrown it is by measuring the child's height and knowing the limit of the seat itself.
It is trickier in Australia but there are seats there that rearface til 18kg.

Is that different for capsules? I wasn't worried bout feet for my daughter, but when I hired a capsule for my son, the lady who fitted it said feet touching the backseat meant he'd outgrown it

Ta, I read that on your other post or message after I commented on this one. He's still to tall for his carseat in reverse, but yesterday I saw Australia's first ever 0-8car seat (by Infa), and though it still says it's only rear-facing for a year, I plan on looking into it to see if it can be rear-facing for longer cos it's bigger

That's great news Sarah! If you have any other questions about it just google search rear facing carseats and safety and you can find oodles of sites explaining the safety recommendations, search in the videos and you can find crash test videos showing how your child's body would react in a crash in both seats. It's all very good to know and then you can spread the word to others in your life!
If you want, I can post some links to good safety sites. Otherwise, just do some searching :)

I had no Idea! Thanks for posting :)
I had already switched to foreward facing at 10 months, because he outgrew the carseat. It's a convertable one though so I'll definitely be switching to rearfacing from now on!

my son wont be 1 year old until september but we've already converted him to a bigger rear facing carseat instead of his old infant one (we still use it rarely in his dads truck) he outgrew the weight requriement which was i think 18lbs (he outgrew it when he was around 6 months old) i got the safety 1st one thats meant to fit into smaller/compact cars. he loves it. its RF up to 45 lbs and can be FF up to 60 lbs :)

One note for you Kelly is that feet touching the seat is actually not a safety hazard.
My kids both can kick the back of the seat while rearfacing!
No incidents have occurred of broken legs as the legs bend up to the chest in a crash.
Until the child has their head at the top of the seat they aren't too tall!

Here in Australia babies can go front-facing from 6months (as long as they are a minimum weight according to manufacturer's instructions, eg,8kg). But like many of you I'd much rather keep my children rear-facing for longer. For both my children I found I had to move them to forward-facing at 11months, as they were getting too tall for our rear-facing seats and their feet were touching the back seat. Which is kind of scary considering American babies can stay rear-facing for years longer. But just now, I was happy to read our government papersadmitting that rear-facing is safe and ideal (http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/a34d7a...)! (Thugh that's not common knowledge).
Thanks for spreading the awareness Laura.

The diono is my absolute best recommendation!
I couldn't find a better seat available in the USA.
I have the sunshine kids radian xtsl for both my kids as I bout them before the company switched over to diono.
The diono rxt is the best seat I've found.
The britax is also very good but more expensive and doesn't last as long.
