in the last two weeks i have started loosing a lot of hair. every time i run my fingers through my hair i get handfuls of hair that falls out.. im afraid im going to end up bald if it keeps up cause my hair is starting to get pretty thin..

i still take a prenatal vitamin everyday but im wondering if there is something else i can do and if this is even normal. i did have thyroid issues during my pregnancy and i have an appt with my gyn for a check up next week so i do plan on asking them about this too.

any help would be appreciated. thanks ladies!

Hair loss occurs within 3-6 months after giving birth. The explanation for this is that your hormones, estrogen and progesterone are at a high during pregnancy. The moment you pop out that baby out, these can send another barrage of changes in your body, particularly a drop in these two hormones which can lead to hair loss. This is natural process of the body. so don't panic yet:) ~ Lendy

I'm shedding like crazy. I've always had lots of hair, but I've never had it come out like this. I googled it b/c I was nervous - says it's normal b/c of all the hormones that kept us from losing our hair during pregnancy (which is why it looked lustrous!).

Just had a baby 4 months ago. Didn't think it was related to the pregnancy. I have been wearing alot of ponytails since she was born, since I have no time to fix my hair. The ponytails can loosen hair and make it fall out in clumps. I had to just start wearing my hair down, no matter how bad it looked, lol!

I am loosing hair too.. my daughter is always trying to grab hold of it and wont let go.. i have been finding alot of it falling out or if i run my fingers thru it it comes right out.. i think it is just alot of stress plus all the hormones that are still swarming around. But you won't go bald!

Happened to me too. :( About 5 mo. after my daughter was born the hair above my temples began falling out like crazy for almost 3 months. I wasn't bald but it was so thin I couldn't pull my hair back. And then it grew back so slowly, I had "whispies" forever! I'm due again in december and I would love to hear of anyone who found a way to minimize this depressing after baby hair loss.

So glad to see that others are experiencing this! I have fine hair anyway, so am pretty traumatized by how much comes out every day! I found it stuck to the ceiling in the bathroom and watch hair tumbleweeds roll around. How long can this go on?! I had my son in May, started losing hair about 2 months later and the loss is still going strong. I hate it! He's worth it, but I don't necessarily want to be bald with him!

It's totally normal, due to shifting hormones. Mine is still on my head so far... but probably not much longer.

I have the same problem. My son was born in May, and I'm still taking my hair out of his hands and his clothes.

Every morning I wake up and pull hair off my baby girl! As we sleep she gets it in her hands, in her neck, etc! So gross :P

Oh my goodness! I gave birth to Identical twin girls in May. I swear I could make a wig a day with all of the hair im losing. I cut 4 inches off, it helped for a week. I recently read a story in parents magazine where the moms hair wrapped around her babies toe so bad, baby had to be rushed to the er, bc she almost .lost her toe! im terrified of that happening. my poor babies have my hair all over them!

hi, i had massive hair loss after both my births. and am currently losing so much hair i am supirsed i'm not bald! i went to the dr last time and was told it is normal. apparently your hair stops growing and then about 12-16 weeks after birth it beings to fall out. they see it in post birth ladies, surgery patients, and people who have had a massive shock. i'm not sure if there is anything you can do about it. but i suspect it's why most ladies cut their hair a few months after their baby is born. it will settle down, and you won't go bald.

some hair loss here. don't worry, you will not go bald. just as you are loosing a lot, a lot is also being born. it is normal and soon it will be normal again.

Yeah, it's pretty normal to lose a lot of hair after pregnancy. And even though I knew it was coming, I still cannot believe how much hair is coming out. Every time I vacuum, the entire canister is full of hair, my drain is constantly clogged, I clean my brush after each use. My babies seem to have a few hairs in their hands every time I pick them up. I too fear I will be bald soon if it does not stop!

Same here...but since I have SO much hair, I really don't care about losing it.
But every single time I brush my hair I can cover the bathroom floor (or make a sweater) LOL

I am hypothyroid and found out in part because my hair fell out. Get your TSH levels checked, and maybe go further than that and ask for T3 and T4 levels, and maybe even thyroid antibodies.

Severe is an understatment! I don't remember it being so bad after my first but I could just be loosing it. It pretty much comes out in clumps. I find it everywhere, including my son's hands as he loves to pull on it. Seriously considering a short(er) cut. Just have to convince my hubby that it will grow back.

I have had the same problem, my first child I did not notice it but. My second and third man do I feel like Im going bald. My Doc told me its normal after pregnancy. You shed all the extra hair you grew pretty much. And also the birth control I'm on doesn't help either. I had my daughter in May and still having issues with it. I have long hair so I dont know if it plays more of a part. Last time I went throught all this I cutt my hair shorter and it seemed to help. OH yeah just try and be gentle with it, never brush your hair when wet, use a pick or wide combo. That might help alittle.

Me too, it's totally normal. Because your hair typically gets thicker and falls out less while pregnant (2nd trimester). But then postpartum it will all come out! Just try to be easy on your hair (brush and wash gently).

I thought it was just me! I'm losing so much hair! I just want to pull it all out so it stops ending up all over everywhere. I don't know what to do but it sure is annoying.

With this preg and my last my hair fell out in handfuls afterward. I can coat the bathroom wall while I'm in the shower, and it grosses my husband out if I forget to get rid of it when I get out. It's funny cuz I don't realize how much more hair I grew while my baby grew, but I definately notice how much falls out after! If you find out about something we can do to minimize the hair loss, please share! :)
