This is an example of why I hate formula!

This was a reply posted to a question in the Breastfeeding Moms community (you might have seen it):

"though I was very lucky that none of my children ever spit up they all had to be put on soy formula. I do watch 2 infants and one has acid reflux and has to have drops prescribed by a doctor before he eats and the other had to have her formula changed too many times to count ultimately they determine she was lactose intolerant. You should also try keeping him upright after feeding him because if he does have acid reflux laying him flat will make it worse."

I see this crap all the time in my local WIC office where I provide my services. These babies are so sick from drinking this stuff! The parents are constantly bringing in notes from pediatricians or constantly calling with some kind of problem saying that they need different formula. We always feel like saying "they don't need a different formula, they need to be breastfed!" Or when we look at the large percentage of babies who are considered lactose intolerant and receiving soy formula, we're like "they're not lactose intolerant, they're formula intolerant!"

It is so frustrating to see these poor babies suffering and no one willing to call the formula industry out on it! Instead, it's the baby's fault-"he has GERD", "she is lactose intolerant", "he has colic/gas", etc. It is not the babies' fault that they are being fed an inferior food that is making them sick!

Both my son and daughter had severe acid reflux from day 2-3 in hospital. My son suffered with it for 6 months unmedicated but my daughter (born 10 years later) takes 1ml of losec each day and it has been a godsend.

Her Paediatrician told me i could put her on formula as she may have a milk protein allergy,i could try the formula but to be aware that it could cause nipple confusion.

There was no way i was going to give her formula...however just as a test,i gave her a little bit one night and she did the most gigantic spew i ever saw,,,same with my son,in hospital the idiot nurses gave him formula without my consent and he puked everywhere. I agree that formula causes more problems,it makes NOTHING any better.

It is a quick fix for some women who are not willing to adjust their diet or do what is necessary to control or cure whatever problems the baby may have....and some even give formula simply to make the baby sleep longer.

I have seen or heard on so many occasions of women who give formula very early in life....only to find that their child has developed allergies very young. They are in and out of hospital having tests and everyone feels sorry for them.
Thats all well and good but i also believe they brought it apon themselves...they seem to not get it though and it never crosses their mind that they played a part in their childs problems.

I hear too much of..."bottle feeding is best for me and my family"...well i wonder why what is best for the baby didn't seem relevant when making that decision. It is not generally "best" for the baby to drink formula 8 times a day last i checked.
I wish more people realized that what they are doing can be very harmful to their child instead of just saying that they know lots of people who "turned out fine" being fed formula....they don't believe the WHO and the many studies but they believe some person on the street who tells them what they want to hear...i find that a very ignorant attitude.

I know Anneka. It is so sad that people have just gotten used to sick babies instead of asking why. Just because babies SURVIVE on formula doesn't make it HEALTHY. Someone could SURVIVE on a diet of only double cheeseburgers and french fries for the rest of their lives, but what kind of life would it be? Would they be healthy? Probably not.

My mum bought me formula ffs with them when I was pregnant and I still have them tins over a year later out of date and ready for the bin. Seems they promote it here. Which I thought they where not allowed to do? why give vouchers for it if your not promoting it government?
yeah how many easter eggs did my 1 year old get! and the lectures about how I dont feed him crap. So sick of hearing it. This is frrom obese people who think I am starving my child of sugar.

Brenda, I get the same reaction when I use my checks. Not getting the baby food yet (baby isn't old enough yet), but before the changes (when I was nursing my other babies), when I would get things like tuna and carrots on mine, the cashiers would be flabbergasted. LOL Or the fact that I get more money to spend on fruits and veggies for myself, is also odd to them.

And yes, you are in the minority of WIC clients. Working with WIC for the past 5 1/2 years has been an eye opener for me. We have worked very hard to increase our breastfeeding numbers, but it can be very exhausting sometimes to get our clients to even consider breastfeeding. It is so sad!

I formula fed my first and it was all because of the idiots at my stupid hospital (and my ignorance as a first time mom). I so wish I hadn't, not because he's ever been sick, the boy's healthy as a horse, but I attribute that to the four weeks of nursing I got in before of the Hellish day in the ER that I went through that dried me up. But I'm proud we never used soy. The bad thing is soy formula is liked to homone problems. Infants are not made to process soy they are made to process human milk. And they have to put so much sugar in soy formula to make them drink it that there is a link to adult diabetes and obesity because of the early exposure to sweets. They end up with a sweet tooth for the rest of their life. I'm sure that's one reason I prefer sweets, my mom said the formula she gave me was chocolate flavored because it was soy. To her credit my mom tried, but she nearly starved my sister because she just never produced milk at all. Never came in for either of us. But still.

My WIC office loves me because I'm nursing at nearly 11 months. They look out as they get my checks, and go "Need any formula?" I'm like nope, not at all, and get huge grins and thumbs up because I'm in the vast minority. When I go pick up the baby food, as a breastfeeding mom I get the meats, you will not believe the cashiers that tell me they've NEVER seen anyone get the jarred meats before, and I have to tell them only nursing moms get it.

Everyone worries about childhood obesity, adult obesity and diet, well when you start out life on the wrong food what do you expect?

oh then the excuse " my baby is fine and we ff him/her" tired of hearing that. Are they really finr then? how do you know? how do you know of they could have been better. And by the way lots say they are fine but you only need to take one look at them and they are obese with health problems and say thats not formula. I would prefer to get something out of my body, I know whats in there than someone who just wanted money! formula companies have a lot to answer for. I found out stuff I didnt even know thats made me angry yet people wouldnt believe it because they think its a scientific break through thats the best for their babies and as they say "it will do it never done me any harm" .

So many are ignorant. I remember someone asking me what formula I was using and which one made your baby less sick :O without actually admitting its the formula apparently poeple think babies are just like that. Never ever had this problem with my son and he is still breastfed at 14 months and I am pregnant again and no formula shall pass my childs mouth.

The funny thing about that is if the Dr. actually did know what he was talking about he would not recommend soy! It is against the AAPA If the baby is allergic to cows milk then they are likely to develope a Soy allergy as well. That is straight from the AAPA. And i totally agree with the generic GERD and Cloic it seems that if you go to a Dr. with any infant problems those are the anwsers you get. Instead of the dr recomending breastfeeding as a solution they push drugs for Gerd and tell you to switch formula.....It makes me sick as well!

There is sooo much ignorance out there about the realities of formula feeding. And the moment you dare to question it as a viable "option" people get very upset. it's crazy. I always figured since I had to supplement my daughter with the vile stuff, that people might be willing to listen to my concerns about it. But no, they just want to bury their heads in the sand. No one can understand why I was willing to do just about anything to get my milk supply going (and willing to pay just about anything for donor milk) to avoid feeding my daughter that crap. They thought I was just a paranoid new mom. And the medical industry just feeds right into it. I wish people would open their minds and see the damage that it's doing.
