Just found out I was pregnant about a week ago. And the very same day found out we are moving to Baumholder Germany. Wondering the simple things........I have a 7 year old so I am wondering what the on post schools are like.........is there a walmart (lol) (no seriously)...........what is there to do since I obviously won't be going out drinking.............what is there for kids to do..................is anyone else stationed there?

I lived in Germany for 6 years, Ramsteing AFB. My youngest son was born at Landstuhl Army Hospital (LRMC). There is a German version of Wal-Mart but it's not the same thing. Luckily getting around Germany is very easy and pretty quick. Ramstein was redoing the BX right after we left. My husband has been back and he said the base is pretty awesome now.
There are so many wonderful things to do off post. Just make sure you get out and enjoy the local economy. The Germans are very friendly and the food is delicious (i had some favorite places to eat that I really miss).
There is a car museum which my boys loved going to visit (I'll have to ask my husband if he remembers where that was). Plus my two older boys (who were 8 & 4 when we arrived in Germany) loved going to the castles etc. Both of my older boys would love to go back to Germany.
The good thing is that Baumholder isn't that far from the bigger bases. I ran into friends who were stationed at Baumholder at the Ramstein food court every few weekends. Have fun, you're a lucky gal!

I'm also in Baumholder, and I LOVE it! There is no walmart, but Ive become quite fond of Globus (the German equivalent) sadly the closest one is about 30 minutes away.I have a 6mo and (sadly) don't have a night life either, but I have found MANY places for day trips, Idar is just about 20minutes...which brings me to the driving test. Starting studying NOW :) you'll thank me later. Good luck, add me if you like ":)

Hi! I'm currently living in Baumholder and also pregnant with my second child over here. There are 2 different on-post schools, Smith and Wetzel. Which one your child will attend depends on where you end up living. The Baumholder community is split into main post (Smith) and 2 miles away the Wetzel Kaserne. On both Smith and Wetzel you will find that you'll live in stairwell housing. Make sure you bring or have your husband bring the notice that your pregnant to housing when you go request housing so you get the appropriate number of bedrooms. Make sure you insist on seeing more than one apartment! Don't let them railroad you into picking just the first one you see. Warning some of the buildings are also being renovated.

As for shopping, buy everything for the new baby before you come here. Our selection is tiny!!! compaired to what you can find in the states. One you'll come you'll learn about the KMCC mall at Ramstein AFB which is 40 minutes away which is just a big PX/BX. After 3 years of living here I can say that Amazon and the CMR will become your best friend. If you wait to buy baby furniture here you are stuck with whatever the PX has or you will have to wait 6 months for it to arrive from the AAFES catalogue.

Our ACS is fabulous! I highly recommend taking all of the courses possible such as the R.O.C.K. and some of the local area / travel courses.

Since you have a 7 year old there are CYSS sports offered depending on the season. Once you have your little one and they are a bit older (6 months) I highly recommend the wiggles and giggles playgroup which is offered by ACS and is located in Wetzel.

Now for maternity care, you have a few options. We have a local clinic here that the OB's from the military hospital (LRMC) 40 mins away, come in and see us once a week. For the most part I suck it up and drive to Landstuhl for my appointments just due to the fact that I have more choices in providers, the lab work usually comes back faster, and that's where you'll probably deliver.

I hope this helps give you an idea of what to expect. If you have any questions feel free to send me a message.

hi jennifer,

the good news is that it's a small quiet city...you'll love the nature, the climate, the locals (most of them are frienldy and willing to help you find your way, others, well, are not so helpful!) ...

the bad news...it's a small quiet city...there's not much to do in and outside the base and the next big city is quite far away. i used to visit my cousin there who was married w/an active duty army. honestly, i could imagine living there for a yr or two but more than that, nah, it is really in the middle of nowhere and during the winter/snow season when everything's covered in white blankets, it's really hard to get to one place to the next coz the roads are either closed or too dangerous to drive on. not to scare you, but baumholder is known to be the city where many GIs get into car accidents, most of them fatal. other than that, if you're not a party animal and enjoy the country side, baumholder's the city for you...for a yr or two, not more than that...hehehe...congratz on your baby! i am not from baumholder but i'm a german married to an active duty soldier here in wiesbaden (3-5 hrs away by car). so if there's anything you need or don't understand when it comes to the locals or german culture, let me know, i can fill you in...your stay here in germany doesn't need to be miserable, you can actually enjoy it! till then!
