Anyone in Heidelberg Germany?

Is there anyone still at Mannheim? I was curious about the storage capabilities in the housing area. Are there any? What kind of storage is in the actual apartments?

Its not actually shutting down. Its being used as the main headquarters but starting in 2015 it will start being phased out.

We still haven't come down on actual orders yet, but my husband has been told that he's going to 30th Med Com in Heidelberg. I wonder if something's going to change (THat was almost two months ago we found that out!)

My husbands orders got changed also to Schweinfurt Germany. I have no idea what to expect there. I've been told that Heidelberg is shutting down.

We recieved our oconus orders a few weeks ago and was suppose to go to Annsbach but they changed it just todat and now we are coming to Heidelberg. His unit will be at Coleman Army Airfield. Anyone there already? We will be there in November.

The funny thing about the POV is I still have to ship it to Hawa'i, but it sounds like it would be cheaper in the long run than to have to deal with selling mine now and buying a new one in Hawai'i or Germany.
Is everything still up and running at Heidelberg? I'm mostly afraid that we will be bored and there will be nothing to do if units are moving away. That being said I still won't know anything about specifics until my hubs gets back from Iraq. I'm super excited to go to Germany, but the base closure just freaks me out.

I don't know anything about Manheim, but Elizabeth, I would definitely say to bring your POV. You may still end up getting a "beater" here there is no harm in shipping your POV. They don't charge for it, so it's no cost. Just send it as soon as possible, preferably about 6weeks before you leave if at all possible, then you will have virtually no wait time. It was difficult to find a car once we got here, we finally got very lucky but there are a LOT of people that are just looking for more more more money. I saw a 2001 Ford Focus for sale for $6000. I had one of those that we left in the states the only difference was mine was white and the one being sold was silver...and my car is worth $2000 at the most. The specs were all the same...so yeah. It's possible to find something but hard.

My husband and I are supposed to be getting to Heidelberg in November... I would like some information too! We won't know what unti until summer though. I have read a few places that they will be shutting down Heidelberg. I'm confused... is Manheim the same as Heidelberg or is it different? Is housing really small? We have a sectional and I'm worried about it fitting? Is it worth it to bring our POV or should we get a car there?

Manuela, his orders say early Oct 2011. We are going to try and leave earlier, as we are both ready to get off of Ft. Gordon. I'm excited about the move, and also fearful of all the change. My husband told me today that they are closing Mannheim. So now I'm worried I'm going to have to pack and move again after we get there! Thanks for all the help!

Mannheim community is getting smaller. They are starting to close down. I don't know about your husbands unit but my husbands unit is moving to semsbach in August. THe PX is getting smaller and is out of a lot of things. You will have to move on post because they stoped allowing people to live off post. You will live in stairwell housing. The appartments are mostly remodelt. There is puplic transportation right outide off the gate. There is a shopping mall 10 minutes away. But it is not the same what you are used to in the states. it is smaller. Down town mannheim is also not far, where you will find a lot of stores as well. I hope I could help a little bit I just have no information about your husbands unit since my husband is MP. I recoment that you will do some traveling and sight seeing. Don't just stay on post! Let me know if you have any more questions. When will you be moving here?

Kristen, it has changed as far as we've been told. It also says right in the back of our passport that it can only be used in our host country, not to travel. It kind of sucks, but it's not a huge issue. Having a tourist passport is a good idea anyways, being here or somewhere else.
Adrienne, my good friend is at Mannheim. They live on post. She loves her place, it's apartment style and very comfy she says. I haven't visited there yet.

Manuela, so we just got orders to Mannheim, my husband will be in 7th Signal Brigade. Please tell me all that you can! What is it like on post? Off post? What is on post housing like, and the housing you have now? I'm so glad that I have someone that lives there that I can talk to!! Thank you for anything!!

Hi, I life about 15 min away from Heidelberg. My husband is stationed in Mannheim and we life off post. Heidelberg is a great old city where you will be able to shop for everything you need down town. It is a deploying united but I don't know when they will deploy next. My husband might know. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Bree S said that you can't travel on Military passports. We were able to when we were there (2002-2005). Military passports are only good if you are officially stationed overseas (i.e. we are at Leavenworth now, so we could not use our military passports). I went to 14 countries on my military passport. The only difference was a stamp on the back that said something about a SOFA (status of Forces Agreement). This may have changed since 2005.

LOVED Heidelberg! We were stationed here from '02-'05. My husband deployed with V Corps Artillery (VCA). We lived in Mark Twain Village (MTV). MTV was all 2 and 3 bedroom apartments (stairwells). Patrick Henry Village (PHV) had 2 and 3 bedroom units and larger ones. PHV is also where the commissary is located. There is an elementary school on PHV and MTV. The middle school is on PHV and the high school is on PHV. The housing was stairwell apartments--some had laundry in the unit and some had it in the basement. Downtown Heidelberg is great! If you live on MTV you can walk and there are restaurants you can walk to. Best of Luck!!! It was our most favorite post so far!

I'm about 3 hours from Heidelberg so I can't answer most of your questions lol. I know that the units do deploy. I don't know their rotation schedule though.

https://onestop.army.mil/Installations.aspx that site will help you with housing issues, you can look at pictures or floor plans of the housing you'll qualify for.

I don't know about shopping off post there but here it's crazy lol. There are some really cool places but this is a rural area so they're hard to find. Heidelberg may be bigger so it may be way easier to find an actual department store (I have found Walgreens-esque stores, grocery stores, a Home Depot like store and a couple of clothes stores). I think you'll love it here if you get out and do stuff and go see places! You'll be a 5 hour drive from Paris! Just make sure to get tourist passports for all of you, not just Army ones. You can't leave your host country on Army ones.
