I was wondering if any of you have the "Army Wife" ACU/BDU style purse? If so, did you make it yourself or purchase one? I want to make an army purse out of an old uniform of my husband's, but am not sure how to go about it... Any suggestions?

Mine was made out of fabric not the real uniform. But yeah I have heard of people making it out of the uniform.

I am trying to make an army purse for my daughter. I started it yesterday and now i am stuck. Can anyone who has made one tell me how you put the pleats in it. My pattern says to sew the bottom and sides together then do the pleats. How? I am confused. I have torn this apart twice already. A project i thought would be easy turned out harder than i thought. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am wanting to make an army purse too. I love my husband so much and having the uniform with me is like having him with me.... deployments are rough on both sides of it and I dont think so much its a way of showing rank but showing your pride as well. and recycleing his old uniforms is fantastic, I hate to see them rot away. my hubby is a mechanic so its not like they can be re used... I am having an issue finding the right pattern..

Thanks Ladies for all of your suggestions! I ordered some ACU fabric online today and it should be here in the next week! Next I have to get the right thread, zipper/magnets/closures and some backing fabric to match! Oh... and a pattern! Any suggestions on patterns for army purses....?

Just to be clear...I only use the name tapes, which come in handy for when I go somewhere and grab the right bag. I also think it would be disrectful to think it appropriate to use the rank in any manner other then on the uniform it was intended for. I do love the PT shirts though, they make comfy outfitting for yard work and are great for sleeping.

@Abby - I'm not planning on putting a rank patch on, i just really liked the purse and wanted to put our name & Mommy or something on there. Not trying to be offensive - It's just something i saw and thought was nifty.

i dont have any of that on mine i have army wife i think they shouldnt be aloud to put their husband rank either most woman like to wear their husband rank as their own which is wrong i dont see wat wrong with sleep in his shirt all wives sleep in their husband shirts i have one of his pt shirts i sleep in alone because i bought to many of them last yr so he gave it to me to sleep in

I hate these army purses... I don't know if its the fact that I've worn the uniform (BDU) but having your husband's rank, patches n'such on a purse is a bit offensive to me... it ranks with women that wear their husband's patrol cap or parts of the PT uniform with pajama pants... just seems disrespectful to me...

I make tote/messenger bags and have also made a few smaller bags for our kids and nephews out of old BDU's. The blouses are great for making a bag with plenty of outside pockets! I even turned an old pair of pants into a laundry clip holder for my girlfriend. The fabric is great and because the BDU's have been discontined, they make a great way of showing a new way to wear an old uniform. I have never used a pattern, I am sure they are out there, but look at the fabric and let it inspire the way in which to cut it and make the bag look once finished.

I used a tote bag pattern and changed it to fit my needs or how i wanted the bag to look. Theyre available at all craft stores and online. Ive seen a couple women up here with them and i loved the idea of reusing an old uniform of his. I want to make a blanket or teddy bear for my son as well

I always thought that destroying a uniform was illegal unless you had a license to do so.. Could be wrong, though.. But maybe something you'd want to check into just to be on the safe side..

I made one out of my husbands uniform. I purchased a pattern from the store and tried a bunch of different ways to get it to fit. It was too small but i was able to make it work by changing it a lil. All i have to do is sew on the straps. I would suggest if you dont have one already to get a sewing machine and to practice before you start on the purse to get a feel for it. Some go for under 100 dollars. And id also suggest getting a sewing kit. I found one at walmart for around 5 dollars that had needles, measuring tape, pins/cushion, thread picker etc. It was difficult trying to put it together with a one year old all over me so i had to work on it while he was sleeping. Good luck and let me know how it goes or if youwant any help
