We've been blessed with the Recruiting Duty curse in the middle of an air force town. We're a Marine family (I'm prior service and he's active duty) so Marine wives can appreciate my 'WTF!' mentality. I have no one here to talk to and both the RS and RSS are over an hr away. I'm also a Department of Defense employee (i.e. 'Civilian Marine) and am now without a job for the first time since I was 14. While this should be a welcomed break to me and our 3 children (ages 5, 4, and 11 mos), I have no IDEA what to do with myself! I feel so useless. There are no activities here for our kids and seriously, I can only go to the park so many times hoping to meet people. Is there anyone out there in the Goldsboro/Pikeville, NC area who would like to befriend me? I don't think many people hang out in cornfields and I'm not all that into all the churches on every street here, so please don't recommend I try one (I'm religious, just not THAT religious...ya know?). Please help!!

I'm not sure if being religious and a christian are the same thing. Churches actually have great programs and activities for children and the parents, so you may want to look there.

Oh yeah and I forgot, the schools there are not year round and I hate to make it even worse but the schools are horrible out there. Wayne county publics schools are ridiculous! I had a few friends who had elementary aged and high school aged kids and all I ever heard was not great, Idk where u are originally from but where I am from the inner city schools are better than wcps! The only school that I know is a really good one is Wayne country day school on country day rd off of Wayne memorial.

We just left Goldsboro in march 2012, if I was still there I would hang out with you! I felt the same way, we live out on pikeville Princeton about 5-10 min from the Walmart. Having a job will help you make friends outside your home for sure! I had a hard time adjusting the first year or so, but it did grow on me. When we left I did cry bc it was the place where we purchased our first home and had our first child so it did end up meaning a lot to me, but as for the actual area there is nothing to do out there unless you participate with activities on base. Which we never did, I actually never really associated with anyone military related which sounds bad I know but since its a small town and small base, the drama is not small. I tend to enjoy a drama free life and so does my husband so we pretty much kept to ourselves. We went to Raleigh and Greenville a lot to shop, hang out and go eat at nice restaurants... we are from Texas and the BBQ in NC is horrible!!!! Lol.... If you want to shop you can go to the outlets in Smithfield, you can find some bargains there and try and go out to Asheville, it's gorgeous out there! Make the most of it while your out there, I know it's hard bc it's a very small town with nothing to do! If you have any questions let me know!

I understand where you're coming from. My husband got off recruiting duty a little under a year ago and we were near Rapid City, SD. So our nearest base was Ellsworth AFB. Since you are religious but not overly religious, one of my suggestions is that you might enjoy MOPS (mothers of preschoolers). It is a Bible study group but then there are also crafts and speakers. Another suggestion I have is to find a local library. They usually have storytimes for children. Also, I think NC has year round school. Since your eldest is old enough for kindergarten, you might want to look into it. Having a child in school will put you in contact with other mothers with children around the age of yours to start a support group.
