My husband, our 2 boys, and I are stationed at Ft. Sill, OK right now. We requested to go to Ft. Drum, NY. I am looking for any info on the post, what there is to do, the childcare/schools for children ages 2-5, info about the area, what there is to do, places to go, attractions to see. Basically any info you have. Weather info would be nice too! Also, tips on places to live, where to buy a house at! I appreciate it! :) Thanks!

The area is very nice and the base there has alot of cool events...i attended a bowling for soup concert there a few years back and i grew up in that area...Your children would probally attend Calcium elementary or Evans Mills elementary...there are alot of options for daycare and Pre-K classes... In the town of Watertown only about 3 miles away they have a history museum and a science museum they r really cool we took our 1 yr old last april and she loved it. The summers there r nice but sometimes really dry...and the winters r cold and they get alot of snow. i hope you find this somewhat helpful.

Hi, I'm at Drum. I live off post though. When we got here 2 years ago, there was housing available. We live about 30 minutes north of post. The closer you are to post, the more expensive off post housing. The weather is cold and snowy. It's not too bad, once you get used to it. I'm originally from the area, so I'm used to it. I don't know much about the school system, cause my oldest is 3. I know daycare on post is good, I've used it before. Plus one of the gyms does free daycare while you work it, which is nice. There's lots to do if you like the outdoors. There's a mall about 10 minutes off post. I like where I live. It's Gouverneur. It's a small community but everyone there is so friendly and housing is reasonable. Plus for a small town, they have lots of activities. I am glad that we moved there. Plus they don't get hammered with as much snow as other places. Syracuse is about an hour and a half away and there are tons of things to do there. I'd say check the post paper for activities. If you have more questions message me and I can tell you more. Shelagh

Hi jennifer! My husband, my 8 month old daughter and i will be going to ft drum in may. i was just as curious as you are about what to expect. i went to the ft drum website to kind of get an idea of what to look forward to. they have information on housing, and u can see all the different kinds of communities within the base, and it gives u floor plans of the homes that are on base. and if your looking to buy a houe they have links to help you get started with that also. i found the website to actually be helpful. as far as the weather goes, i know it is freezing up there and that they get TONS of snow. hope this is somewhat helpful to you!
