Ft. Campbell Area / Air Assault Wives?

My husband, myself, and our son (13 months) just moved here to Ft. Campbell, our first duty station, over the weekend, and he just started his processing yesterday. He wants to do the Air Assault training as he thinks it would be "cool" to rapel out of helicopters. However, I am scared out of my mind over this whole 101st Airborne/ Air Assault thing.

And frankly, being here at Campbell where they deploy heavily is scaring me too. Anybody living in the area, or anybody have an Air Assault hubby?

Hey Yolanda, I'm still trying to meet people, and I've been here since May! I've been failing miserably on getting out and doing anything! lol

I havn't checked this site in months, and so I was suprised anybody said anything on it recently...

We should get together sometime and find something girly to do...I never do anything for me, and I bet with 3 kids you probably dont either!

Email me and we can talk about it or anything for that matter.lol my son (now 19 months) is my biggest entertainment every day...I need some conversation with other adults! lol My husband is only home a few hours a day..as you know...and I need female friends!!!

I just moved here in May, but I live off post. My hubby is also is 101st airborne, hes been here since 2005 coming from ft hood in TX. the area seems nice and this is also living away from my family but i found to call them every other day or so helps from being homesick. as far as the air assault i would have to talk to my hubby on that, hes been deployed 3 times since joining and its up in the air about possibly a 4th.

We've been stationed here at Campbell for almost 2 months now. My hubby is also in the 101st. Currently at Ft Polk training for an upcomming deployment in January.Ironically we just come from Ft. Polk. We were there for 7 years. I wouldn't worry about the whole Air Assault part of it. They only jump like once every couple of months. Well that's how it was at polk and get an extra $150 monthly for jump pay.

been here over 4 yrs I have been in miliary for 35 yrs and i have been in worse places. the hard part is the deployments you think the more you do the better but it wears you down bit by bit. good luck

Air Assault isn't bad :) They really enjoy it and when the repel, the aircraft isn't high really, so don't worry :) As far as deploying, they all deploy anymore. Ft. Campbell used to be "bad", but it seems that lately all of the posts deploy about the same! My husband has been in for 13 years, and we've been married 9. He's Avaition and was with the 101st when i met him. we're now back at Campbell (me ahead of him) and he will be going into the 160th (special ops). He's a helicopter mechanic, but going to WOCS soon, we hope!

I used to hate Ftcky, but I love it after being stationed at Hood. I realized that what I hated was deployments, but you get those no matter what, and become a pro at them. We're very glad to be back here now, and post is getting better, with the new housing and upgrades to other buildings.

You can hate or love ANY post that you are at. It's all what you make of it. I know the area and have friends here that have also been here forever. If you ever want to make some new friends, we're always open :) I have no problem answering any questions either if you have any. You can email me on here if you like or at luvmysoldier@mac.com :)

Hope that you like it here...just remember...there is (almost) always somewhere else that is worse in SOME way!!! lol

My husband and I have been here a few months. I just had our lil boy 2 months ago, so now I'm getting the chance to go out alot more. Campbell can be fun, theres alot of stuff in the area. And if you liveo n post you'll meet alot of army wives who will be there to support you.

Don't get me wrong, the military can be a wonderful life if you make it. Deployments are hard, as are the training exercises and schools and everything else. Making friends and staying focused will get you through. The px should be great. We PCS'd right before they finished renovations. Quick directions.

101 drive off of 41 takes you to gate 10 or to Wilma Rudolph which is where the mall is and all the other strips.

Need to go to the airport. Take Briley Prkwy, never take 24 all the way in to 40.

41 all the way through town will take you to Austin Peay U and Riverside Drive which is very pretty and does a great light show at Xmas.

If you are into the outdoors, definitely go to Land Between the Lakes. 24 towards Paducah

For intro info, take at least Level 1 AFTB class. It really helps you understand the military mission and military etiquette, rank, etc. Most posts have newcomer's orientation and again lots of helpful info.

I understand what you're saying, but so far I've met a couple mom's in the area that are willing to help show me around, and get me aquainted with the base and the area, as like I said this is our first duty station, and the first time I've ever lived away from my family. So I think that will help, having a few people that are willing to be my allies in attempting to navigate this crazy system...

Quoting Abby:

wow debbie.. you're not very reassuring...

About what?  It is how Campbell is for some.  Forewarned is forearmed.  Campbell was my first duty station after marrying my husband and it damn near drove me out of the military.  As is typical with the military, not everyone's experiences are the same which is what people are asking for.

I love the south, originally from MD, but hated Campbell. Not so much the area, but the whole 101rst attitude. If he is in a good unit, it won't be so bad, but get a bad unit and there is no fun.

Yeah, I've heard Campbell referred to as the "black hole of army bases" for that reason. I'm quite nervous about that. Mind you, I don't mind the area, I actually love the south, I have family in Virginia, but I deffinately havn't been here long enough to decide whether or not I will be happy here "FOREVER".lol

We are at Lewis now, but spent 4 yrs at Campbell. Air Assault isn't that bad and any infantry post will deploy. Which unit is he with? However, we have a saying, once you go Air Assault, you can't go back. Make sure you love Campbell. You may PCS for 3 yrs, but you will be back. My husband is Airborne, but refused to become Air Assault for that reason. I can't tell you how many stories of people I knew who wanted to escape the Campbell cycle and couldn't. Good luck. I couldn't wait to see those gates in my rearview mirror.
