Ft. Hood or Ft. Bliss?

What about the schools in Fort Bliss? We have a middle school child and high school student. Is there a school onpost and is it good or where off post would be good?

We moved to Ft Bliss just last month from Ft Hood. We LOVED Ft Hood. Ok the base is old but the area is nice. Everything is close there are lots of playgrounds and we just really want to go back!

I haven't been to Ft. Bliss myself. We've been @ Ft. Hood since August. I really like it here. Any place is what you make of it. We live in Copperas Cove. Many of my friends live in Harker Heights. I also have a two year old daughter. Send questions if you have any. =) mychael.klajic@gmail.com

My husband has a few more weeks of AIT left and his next station is Fort Bliss.We have 3 small children and some of the posts are concerning...Hopefully its better than what I'm reading.

The housing is nice. They have built so many new housing. Most of the bad is tore down or already taken. So the ppl who were here 2 yrs or more it has changed. I been here since 2008 and its so much better. Its more black and white people here. The whole post is different. The Biggs airfield has new everything its a whole other post in it self. Im ready to go cause of the hispanics. But i havent had any problems on or off post.

Ft. Bliss is nice. They have a new px they are building alot of new houses. The post is nice and the cost of living is cheap. Its hot but not humid so it bearable and i am from Michigan. The winters anf falls are nice. It hardly ever gets real cold. Only at night and early morning. This winter was a little colder. It is dry here but its alot of stuff around here. Alot of people comeor stay here when they retire. But its a bi~lingual city. Thats what i hate. Alot of hispanics....if you dont speeak spanish its hard to get a job. But on post is real nice. They have built new schools and daycares. New movie theatre. In like i said the px....Nice. Its has lots of resturants. U can sit outside in eat. Its really nice. One of the nicer post. And its big.....

Ft hood is in central texas and we live fairly close to the base. It is BIG has 2 commissary's and 2 PX's Texas does not have state income tax where as Ft.Bliss does. There is LOTS to do and see in Texas which is where I grew up as well. I dont know much about Ft.Bliss as we were navy and never stationed at an army base. We dont have the threat of hurricanes but we do get some nice rain storms now and then. I would look into what they have at around or nearby each base of interest to you and your spouse to fit your family needs. Also look at cost of living in both areas.

We were stationed at Bliss for 3 yrs and it was horrible. The heat, sand, and worst of all was the immense ratio of americans to mexicans, I am not prejudice by any means but getting job is hard, shopping is even worse and the housing is bad. A friend of mine is PCSing there and its a 6-12 month wait for a house. The sand is horrible when the wind blows, or just being outside tracks it in. Yes its a big city but u couldn't pay me to move back there. Even though the country says that El Paso is a safe city, they lie. The amount of crime spilling over the border is crazy and the fact that they allow people without post stickers on post and the mexican people go thru your trash the night before trash day. I hated it at bliss and there isn't anything really good about it, from my point of view. I had my kids in the local school, and they came home singing songs in spanish but didn't know what they were singing about, and i had a fit with the schools and they said that the language is better learned early but when they don't know what they are saying or singing, that is an issue for me. Good luck in your decision but i would choose Hood,even though they deploy a lot.

I say Hood we just left there for Japan... We have a 1 year old and the daycares on post are great... there is a long list so if you find out you are going get on it ahead of time ( if they still let you) They have a lot of housing so it is easy to get a place. what we loved about it is that it was in the middle of everything... 50 mins from Austin a few hours from San antonio and Dallas... we made a trip to San Antonio about once every month and a half and went to Austin for all the festivals they had in the area... if you like the outdoors there is a lake on/off post that is a big hit once it gets warm... it has a waterfall and you can rent boats and such... there are also lots of places to bike etc...etc... I have friends that just left Bliss and did not like it... Soldiers can't go to Mexico anymore so it kills that perk and it is really hot there... Hood is toasty don't get me wrong but not sandy hot.Oh and shopping if you like outlets and normal shopping Hood is where you want to go Round rock is right around the corner with awesome shopping... I can't think of anything else but feel free to ask :)

We were at Ft Bliss, we didnt like it, Im a nurse and I had a difficult time working due to language barriers, there was nothing interesting to do #didntenjoy at all

I am at Hood, and am narrowly escaping a PCS to Bliss with my husband's unit. I have heard all the same stuff about Bliss as Jessica seems to have :) As far as summer goes, it is regularly in the upper 90s -100s here, and have heard it is even hotter at Bliss.

I'm at hood and other than traffic, it seems to be okay. We haven't been here during the summer yet, so I can't say what the weathers like during the summer. I've spoke to a few people who havebeen to bliss and not one has liked it. They said the crime is REALLY bad around there because of how close it is to the mexican border. Again, not my words, that's just what I've been told. I personally have no interest in bliss and I'd fight it if they tried to send us there. Everyone has their own opinion. Hope you get what you want! :-)

I loved Hood and wish we could go back! Great preschool program for military kids in the elementary schools once she gets old enough too :) You only have to be three to get it to that :)

I haven't been to Bliss, but am currently at Hood! My husband was at Bliss and absolutely HATED it! He said going off post wasn't fun!! There seems to be alot of things for kids to do around here, but our boys are older!! There are alot of pools on post so that'd be something you could do with your daughter ;) however, most soldiers deploy after coming here! Not sure about Bliss, so you'll have to think about that ahead of time ;-) good luck on your decision!!

I don't know about hood but I loved bliss. So much culture and tons to do and I loved the weather it does get quite hot in the summer but I still loved it!

Ft. Hood because Ft. Bliss is too freaking hot there and you will totally hate going to walmart there, and you will hate cleaning sand out of your furniture and you house.
