My husband in in the process of completing Bootcamp and AIT training and received his orders to Fort Riley, KS. I am from Philadelphia, civilian life, lol. Nice summers and cold winters. Anything anyone can offer as far as what its like to live on base. Housing, weather, child care, recreation, resources? I am new to all this so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Arlene

Look up IMMEDIATELY online to get phone numbers to the base, get your name on the list for base housing and for CDC- child development center, these things usually haave a long waiting list and you would want to be able to start those things ASAP. My husband and I are at McConnell AFB in Kansas, we waited too long and are on a 3 month waiting list still for the CDC and a year long list for our base house.

Best of luck!!!

My husband got stationed here right out of Flight School. We've been here about 11 months Post housing isn't bad we lived there for about 6 months then moved to Junction City which is right outside of Riley. Post has new housing so you maybe lucky and get one of the new houses. They have about 4 day cares on post and there building more. This places isn't that bad there are worst places. It is what you make it that's for sure. It is ALWAYS windy here and in the summer sometimes when then wind blows it feels like a hair dryer blowing in your face the winters are not bad at all it snowed 2 or 3 times last year. All in all the weather isn't that bad, but it can be at times. There seems to be a lot for kids to do here, but it seems that they have to be 5 to do most things. You can go to http://www.riley.army.mil/ that's the Ft Riley website with info. Hope I helped if you need anything just ask

We lived at Ft Riley for about 4 yrs. Housing changes all the time so you just have to keep checking, we lived off base in Manhattan KS. It is a nice area(better than some of the towns right next to riley). They have K-State University, there are parks,a small zoo, a lake, all kinds of things you just have to look. You will be about 2hrs from Kansas City, 40 min from Topeka and Salina. They have Child care on and off of post you just have to check around. Weather: hot summers cold winters short springs and falls it seems like. Storms alot, but they usually pass thru quickly. As far as resources, just check with his company when he gets there. All units have FRG's and most give you a welcome packet and let you know what is where. I don't know if they still do it but our company did a meeting for all new soldiers and their families to give us that info. Good luck, its not a bad place but like any other its all of what you make of it!
