We are moving to Charleston in 3 1/2 months and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about base housing? Also we have 2 children one which is school age, does anyone recommend a school in the area?

I agree with Tasha. Although its nice to be on base, Charleston isn't that big of a town that it would take you forever to get around. We're currently in Norfolk, VA, but we lived in Charleston prior to this location. We used to live in West Ashley. I would also recommend getting with a realtor and checking out the place. With the market being down, I don't think you'd have a problem of finding a place off post. Plus it will give you and your husband a chance to separate the navy from your lives.

We lived in Mt P. I know a couple of Navy wives who are realtors down there if you need one!

I would not live in base housing! Especially since you have school age children. It is NOT a good area to have your children go to school. The area surrounding the base is not a good area at all. We were stationed there witht he EOD unit that closed down about three years ago. I do not know anyone that lived in base housing . Everyone lived in surrounding areas ( Ladson, Summerville) and commuted in. Anyone with school age kids that is. Housing there is very reasonable to rent or even buy. For the size of the housing you are better off looking around. I know a good real estate agent who just helped us out with selling our house . She is amazing and wonderful with military families.

you are so welcome. There is a elementary school by the house i'm currently in. I'm not sure if she will be at that one or the one by the Nex. The one by my house is called Marrington Elementary. and the one by the nex is Menvi something .. i'm not quite sure. I think what they mean by outside the gate is all the housing is outside of the gate. The base is located on a main road through goose creek so nothing but the schools (for the navy students going through the nuke program), the hospital and medical stuff and official work areas are behind gates. So none of the housing is gated. I also think that the schools here are public schools but I'm not sure on that. My daughter is 18 months.

OMG thank you so much! We are so clueless lol! We are currently in Utah and recieved orders to the 1st CCTS in May, while my husband was deployed so I have been searching for information but have not been very good at finding it. We called housing yesterday and they said it would be a 30 day wait, gosh I would love new housing if we could get it. We have a daughter who will be going into 1st grade when we get there and school has been one of our biggest worries. The only thing I was able to find online was a school outside the gate that most kids from the base attend? or so it said? We have been searching mad to try and find information on a school and have not found much and what we have found they will not allow us to get her on a waiting list or anything because we are not current residents. Really, thank you so much though! Your information just helped a lot!

hi, I'm living at JBC right now.. They actually have two schools on base, so that will make it easier for you. I know there are two right next to my house. They might actually have 3 schools.. because there is one closer to the old housing as well. i forgot about that one.

The houses are nice rather you get into the new housing or old. But i would call like a month before you guys get here and see if there is a waiting list for the new houses. I know sometimes there can be up to a month or so. I'm in one of the new houses and it's really big and i love it here. Which makes me a little sad. My husband is about to graduate power school and then we are headed to new york for prototype. But everything you need is right here on base. there is a movie theater, gas station, library, a bank, there is the Nex (clothes and what not) , the commissary, a bowling alley, and stuff like that.

I really hope you like it here. There are tons of things to do out in Charleston and the surrounding areas if you love to go and sight see.
