my husband and i are going through the same thing. the only thing with living on post you lose the housing allowance and the military every now and then come through and inspect your house and make sure that your keeping it up the way they want you to. living on post is convent if you have kids that go to school on base and plus everything is right there.

My sister is stationed at Fort Campbell as well..she lives off post in a suburb division and she loves it...she said she can get away from the post and enjoy her house and she is in the military. My husband and I live off post but are at Fort Benning and we have a four month old so I was in the same boat you were....
In my personal opinion I would live off post because of what I have seen of Fort Campbell some of their houses don't look safe. It is your decision but that is my personal opinion...Good luck and I hope that I could be of assistance...

well i realized that all of the military onpost housing changes from post to post. I would rather live on base because i feel safer. I lived on base at Ft. Bragg. We just moved to Ft. Eustis and the housing is horrible unless your an officer. Also, when you live off base you can sometimes save money because onbase they take all of you bah. and you can find nice homes/apartments with some utilities included and that is what saves you money..good luck

If you're at Campbell, it really depends on the area. We live off post in a seemingly quite little neighborhood. If you go to AHRN.com you can take a look at some of the local listings. If you find a property you like, call it's local police station and you can get some stats on the crime rates to consider safety.
We've found that if you're smart about it, you can typically profit a tiny bit by living off post. (We're in Campbell as well)

I have lived both on and off post. It really depends on your familirs' preference. This time we actually had to purchase a house because we have alarge family ,the wait list was 2 years and a mortgage was $330 a month cheaper than renting. On some posts you can not put many hole in the walls or run cablewire, This is for new housing. Some posts have all rank together and the houses a really close togehter. The neighborhoods on post vary also. I have lived in housing where I had some nosier neighbors and have had some queit ones. When living on post you only have a telephone and cable bill. that can save you some money. If you have school age children you have think about changing schools. I have chosen to live off post because I liked the scholls we were in and my son had already been in four schools before 2nd grade. I would say make a list of the pros and cons and figure out the money aspect also. Every place you go you have to figure out that delimma.

depends on the quality of the housing on post. We reevaluate every time we PCS. For example, when we were stationed in Kansas, the post housing was much nicer than anything nearby off post. When we were stationed in Kentucky, we researched and discovered that we could get much nicer housing off post and still pocket some money from BAH. The one reason we always look closely at on post housing first though, is that you can't beat the safety. Military posts (for the most part) are like the country's biggest gated communities. Having kids has made that a bigger/more important issue for us than it did when it was just the two of us. So, short answer -- you have to evaluate every time you move/PCS.

IF YOU GONNA BE STATIONED AT FORT BENNING GEORGIA I WOULD GO OFF POST CAUSE HOUSING SUCKS

It depents on where you are station. The environment around you. So it's really up to you, if on post or off post. We have never leave on post all our military lives. So this time in Hawaii, we are planning to live on base, because our kids are growing and we want them to be in a military community that's safe.

You have to consider the pros and cons. I live in England with my husband and children and we live ON base. But at first, we were off base living in town. It is extremely convenient living on base. You should also consider the size of your base. My base is super tiny so it's very safe and everything is within walking distance...I mean the commissary is 1/4 mile down the road. We decided the convenience was worth it. Think about how often you spend time on post and if you lived on post how often would you need to leave? and when you left to run errands what kind of traffic do you deal with? You just really have to weigh your options. Also consider school...if you have school age children, will they go to school on/off post?

In our situation it was the best decision. People leave their doors unlocked here because of the safety factor although I advise against that no matter where you live.
Good luck!

I live on base now but lived off base when we lived in FL. Housing is privatized here so it's kind of the same except the company here kind of sucks that runs everything. Our house is brand new and for us it ends up being worth it because we have 2 kids and there is no way we would find something this new and decent off base for our BAH in this area. So I guess that is one thing to look at, quality vs price in the area. Also I will say I feel a lot safer on base then I do off, we have never had anything stolen from us here but then again its new housing we have a garage to lock everything up in.

That all depend on where you are living and area around you. I have lived on and off bases at each of my husbands assignments. Where we are at now we perfer off but at his last one we perfered on. You really just have to look at everything around and decide on your own if it is worth it or not.

We lived off post when we were in Hawaii and enjoyed it.

We lived on post when we were stationed at fort Leavenworth, ks and enjoy it as well. It was quite and nice. The houses wasn't that bad either. I like the fact that we can call maintenance if we needed anything fix. There are programs for you to use on post if your spouses is deployed or tdy for and extended period of time. I never had any loud or nosy neighbor either. at this post the schools are really good.

We are living on post at our new duty station and so far the housing is nice. It's very quite and I like that the park is a quick walk.

housing really does depend on where you are station. I can only speak for the ones I have been in.

As far as safety you will find a lot of petty crime both on and off post. Whether we live on or off post I still lock up my house and my car.

I have never lived on post in the states. I have lived on post in Germany. The apartments were ok they weren't the greatest and not having to worry about the German bills were the best part. I did feel safe living on post. Although you are living so close to other people and we had some LOUD people around us and there was really nothing we could do about it. Some say call the mps but if some of the ones partying are MPS then really nothing is going to be done if you call their mp friends. Sure their are partying people everywhere but I have never had that experience living off post with people not respecting you and lowering their radio and so forth. We may try to live on post again one day we deff will if we go to Europe again although right now we prefer off post it's really just all up to you. Go look around the neighborhoods on post and look in a few if they allow it. You can even drive through there at night on the weekends and see how loud if gets or if it even gets loud ;) good luck
