Military friendly bank?

My husband just enlisted in the Army, goes to BCT on April 27. We have been having some serious trouble with our current bank (Bank of Oklahoma) and are looking to switch banks. I'm looking to do this only once, so I'd like to find a bank that will "move" with us. One that has ATM's everywhere, is easy and friendly do deal with, and makes considerations for the military lifestyle. I've found USAA, and have read some good things about them, but I'd like some current, useful info.
We're waiting on our federal tax return to be direct deposited before we switch (we e-filed, so we can't change banks yet), but it's going to be in cash when we deposit it. Unless someone knows of another way, or another bank??

Just FYI...Some of you that bank with Bank of America should pull your funds now. They are one of the banks that took the bailout, so they will be one of the banks that institutes the highest rates, and will be hardest hit when the government throws extra taxes on them for taking the bailout. That could get ugly quickly. Stay away from banks in general, credit unions are better, but definitely keep your money out of the banks that took a bailout.

Well, USAA doesnt have atms everywhere, but they refund you 100% of your atm fees every month. I have used them for over 10 yrs now and they do evyerthing from mortgages to savings and investments. They even give you a "rewards" of sorts for using their credit cards or using the "credit" option when using your debit card, we have thousands of dollars in our rewards that we can use towards flights and things and you can even trade the rewards points in for real cash via a gift card...

Our home is thru them and when our house got damaged by a storm a yr ago they cut us a check asap and there was no hassel whatsoever...

Cant say enough good things about them :)

Best of luck to you... we also use Bank of America, but I pretty much hate them, they are more about their shareholder's proffit and not about the customer. USAA's customer service is really the best

I am biased because I work for Bank Of America. But they do offer great deals for military and are all over. We use them as our local bank when we need to cash checks or other transactions. We also have USAA as our primary bank because they are military friendly and our insurances are through them. They have a great rate for automobiles and renters insurance.
If you are stationed in Hawaii though, you are very limited because they do not have any mainland banks either than sister credit unions.

USAA is awsome, we have used them for over 10 years now! They offer online services, reimburse atm charges from anywhere in the world. Absolutely love them, would not go anywhere else for banking.

I use USAA and must say that even with no local branches i LOVE it! We use the deposit@home feature (using java and your internet connection you can remotely scan a check in and deposit it 24 hrs a day) and the android USAA mobile app that allows you to deposit a check by taking a picture of it. No more need for snail-mail! :-) I've never had a problem! We have them for everything from checking and savings to renters/auto insurance and investment accounts. My husband and I have never had an issue with ATMS either because if you use an ATM that charges you are refunded up to $30 in fees at then end of every month. :-) Oh, and they have some of the BEST savings interest rates i have ever found. we have several accounts with a few banks and by far the best rate is ALWAYS USAA. I hope this helps!

We use America's Credit Union, they have been amazing for us. Since it is a credit union you can use shared branching, which means you can use any credit union. They even worked oversea's in Germany with us.

Oh yeah forgot to mention- get your renter's insurance through USAA, they have amazing customer service. We were forced out of our rental house due to mold issues and USAA put us up in a hotel until we could get into post housing. They are awesome.

We have USAA, it's great. DON'T go with Chase, they are NOT military friendly. USAA reimburses you for ATM fees, they will send you envelopes for deposits, once you have an established account for so long you can deposit checks by scanning them... Great bank. :)

Bank of America does NOT have ANY banks in HAWAII. Just to let anyone know that in case Hawaii is an option for you.

USAA is good for car insurance and all that, but I don't like the banking. Personally, if I want to deposit a check I'd rather go in person. With them you have to scan a check and send it to them. I have Bank of America Military Bank. They have locations and ATM's everywhere. I've never had a problem with them. I switch between Killen Tx, Houston Tx, and St. Louis, and there is a bank everywhere I go.

My husband and I have been using USAA for years. They really are the best. They do only have a few physical locations, however when we need to deposit checks we just scan them on the computer and deposit them that way. The also have automatic bill pay which is really nice. Life is a little hectic when your a military wife so automatic bill pay is nice. They also have lots of other great benefits.

I am with USAA and I love them. It's so easy to bank with them. On top of it you get the ATM fees paid back to you. When you use the debit card as credit you get a certain percentage of the amount back at the end of the month. You can get insurance with them and loans. What I love the most is that you can deposit checks at home.

USAA is the best. They reimburse you for ATM fees if you get charged, you can scan checks and deposit them in your account from home, and they are very hepful on the phone. They are wonderful, I've had them for 13 years and moved all over the world with no problems. We even have insurance through them. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful bank!!!

We joined USAA 6 yrs ago when my husband was Navy. I have never had a problem with them and speak highly of there customer service just remember if you are not near a USAA you will need to mail off a check which can take some time or go to a check cashing place and they can deposit (wire) the money for you/ So good luck picking a bank but USAA is the way to go...My home owners, car policy and checking and savings are with them and will never change...

We are currently using Fort Know Federal Credit Union and USAA. Our main acct is through Fort Knox mainly because my husband has had that acct since he joined. But we have two checking accounts and two savings through USAA, we also have an auto loan and our car insurance and renters insurance through them. Because we use them so much we use the USAA branch at home.

My husband and I love USAA. We have them for our mortgage lender, credit cards, loan for our car, insurance on our cars and our home! They are the best. I think that is a great way to go. My husband is also in the Army ( National Guard) in California. Good luck. I think that's a great choice. They help us families, they have more to offer then a regular bank.

I would recommend USAA for you, I banked with them a few years ago, before they had the electronic check deposits and liked them then. They are the most military friendly bank around, unless you go with one of the Credit Unions that are on most Army installations. I do not recommend Bank of America although they do offer military banking also. I am getting ready to switch from BofA back to USAA soon. The good think with USAA is that you can also get your auto and homeowner's insurance through them and everything is linked together. Makes it easy to control it all from one place.

USAA is a really good choice for banking... They are always willing to help fix any small issue that may occur. I would call them for advice on how to get started. No ATM fees... they re-pay all that the ATM charges..

we have USAA and it's the best. You can use any ATM anywhere and they refund you that bank's charge for use of the ATM; you can deposit checks at home w/ a scanner..... they've been great. Only issue I've had is our insurance rates skyrocketed when we moved back to CA...

USAA!!! I do almost EVERYTHING with USAA, I have my car loan, car insurance, renter's insurance, 2 checking, 1 savings, mutual fund and credit card. While they don't have ATM's they reimburse all ATM fees. Also if grandma sends you a check for the kids, you can cash it on post or IF you have more than one account with them and have a scanner you can deposit them from home. I am currently on unemployment and I deposit my checks every 2 weeks from my office. I wouldn't bank anywhere else. They will also work with you.

We just switched to USAA because we thought we were moving, but now we're not. A plus side to USAA: you get paid a day or two earlier! But before we had them we had the local credit union. I would stick with USAA or a credit union. I've had too much trouble with banks.

USAA is great...that's what we have used for years. You can make deposits online and you can also link external accounts to it if you have other accounts you want to transfer money too.

We use USAA for checking, savings, and auto and property insurance. We've rarely had a problem with them, and it's been our fault when we did. Like Shannon Barone said, they have very few branches, but you can do almost everything online, including deposit checks.

USAA are awesome. Do not ever get a credit card through Bank of America the interest rates are high! LOL But they are also a good bank.

USAA is a good bank, formed for the military, but it does only have a few locations. So if you have a check that Gma sends the kiddos', you'll have to be near a branch to deposit it. Otherwise you have to trust the mail. NOPE! lol We have been banking with America's credit union for 7 years now, after a long stint with USAA. They have been good to us, have other credit unions they partner with, so it is always easy to find a branch to work with if you don't have a ACU near you. Credit unions are the best way to go, they work differently than banks, are not hit hard by the banking crisis we have been hit with, and support the military well. Good luck!

Well, my mom has gone with both USAA and BOA (Bank of America) and they have always been good. My husband has Bank of America, but in Hawaii, they do not have ANY BOA ATMs or banks and I have seen very few Hawaiian banks and ATMs that you can go to with BOA. I've been trying to get my husband to switch to USAA, and that will probably happen when he gets back from deployment.

I would have to say USAA is best. My sister and her husband also use USAA and neither of them are military, but they have never once had a problem, neither has my mom. USAA looks like your best bet.
