Moving into Base Housing for the first time...what can I expect?

Hey ladies (and gents) ;) Sooo, my husband has been in the Navy since 1998 and we've been married for going on 7 years, but we've always lived off base and it looks like we may be headed to the living on base housing route. What can I expect? What is it like? What do I need to watch out for? I mean, it's really nice housing, everything is brand new, each of our three girls will have their own room so that's a plus and I know that I need to keep the lawn mowed and driveway scooped in the winter and can't plant flowers without putting in a request ect... but what should I expect other than that? Are people generally easy to get along with? I'm a 25 year old mom with three kiddos ages 4, 2 and 5 months. My husband is deployed to Afghanistan right now 'til June of 2011 and we are remotely stationed at the moment and are looking at moving onto base as his orders are supposed to roll over into 24 month orders at offutt afb. I have my house pretty much tentatively sold here and waiting to here back from base housing, so I'll be moving myself. Also, I'm really easy going, non judgemental and I don't like to talk about people behind their backs, and I try to get along with everyone. So experience spouses, what are your experiences, advice and input? Thanks ladies and gents and God bless y'all!

We live in base housing in CT and it's not bad. It's run by civilians and it's off base so we don't have the crazy lawn rules that alot of other bases have. My neighbors have all been very nice. A few I know better then others and there are tons of kids in the area. We let our almost 5 yr old play outside at the playground all the time and we never have any problems. This was my first trek into base housing after 6 yrs and so far it's been fine. It's kind of nice not having to worry about all the bills at different times because they take money and then pay everything. :-) As long as your yourself then I think you'll do great. Good luck!!

The rules and regulations are strict, but do vary from base to base. We've moved many times and have found that military housing neighbors are like civilian neighbors - you get the luck of the draw. Some of them are cool, others are real PITA's. The upside to PITA neighbors is that they do tend to move more often than civilians :)
As military spouses, we tend to hear that the military is one big family. Not so much, in my experience.

It's touch and go. I've had 2 bases with great neighbors and one with wackos. Good luck to you!!

We are also moving on post for the first time. I hope we both get awesome neighbors and have nothing to worry about. =)
