My husband is currently in Korea and he just came on orders to ft carson, me and my children are in AL and we will be driving to CO in mid oct. I would like any info bout base that would be helpful, I have a 7yr old daughter and me and my hubby have a 3yr old son. We are very excited and hope that it is as beautiful as I have heard. Also if anyone lives on post can you give me any info bout base housing, I will be faxing our stuff to be put on the housing list in the morning. Thank you in advance. Jessica

Thanks guys, the info is sounding so good. Im so excited, every time i get on the computer to find out more about the area the more i wish i was leaving tomorrow :) I see that living off post might be a better choice....they really havent stated how long the wait list is but i signed up for something through a realty co. so they regularly send me info on local homes for rent. My husband and i havent really discussed where to live yet we have lived in housing at hood and then i stay on base here in AL while he is gone so i guess being on post is something i've just gotten use too....although i will keep my options open. We are definately looking forward to the outdoor things, my hubby is big on being outside and exercising, im trying to get use to all that so the mtn stuff and parks look very interesting. My 3yr is so energetic and he has his rants and raves bout daddy being gone so i hope that people will be use to that. On this post there is hardly anyone gone so no one really understands what he or myself r going through being alone but i will be happy to be around other wives who encounter the same things. My husband is a combat medic and if any of your husbands are in the same mos maybe we will meet up at some function or gathering. Thank you again both for giving me info :)

I've been here, on and off, at Ft Carson. It really is the greatest place to live and raise the kids. super supportive community too! the housing wait list is 18 months out. i've lived all over Colorado Springs, and I keep finding myself farther and farther south! LOL. We currently live in the Fountain/Widefield area. I've heard some people say that there's drugs and thefts down here... but i haven't come across any, and we've been here 3 years now! the housing is much more reasonable, and many of my neighbors are older/retired or else active military. the schools are really great too. there are many military children. and we've stayed in this area specifically because of the school... they've been so understanding of 'acting out' moments and our family dynamics and helped the kids and myself get over many hurdles. It's small town living with big town convenience and access. And Ft Carson is just a stones throw away! When you do get housing, I've been told to avoid the newer housing areas, unless you like being very cold in the winter. I guess they aren't so well insulated... Unfortunately, that's all I know about housing. That and my husbands BAQ/BAH is more than our rent. So it just made sense to be in a 'house' rather than a 4-plex kinda deal on post.
You're going to have a fantastic time at Ft Carson, have no fear!! ;D

The post is pretty big. I have heard good things about the schools on post. There is quite a bit military in this town between Ft. Carson, Peterson AFB and the Air Force Academy. I'm pretty sure which ever school your kids go to there will be a fair amount of thoer military children. There is a fantastic zoo here with a lot of different programs for kids. Also, a lot of sports and play groups. Downtown has a really cool fountain for kids when it's hot durring the summer. The list goes on and on. Sorry I don't know too much about post, I only go when I need to, we live about 30 min away from Carson.

Thank you Jeannie for responding. I saw that some of the housing is new, we have been put on the housing wait list so I hope we get one of the new ones :) The schools that you mentioned, r they the ones on post? My daughter will be in the 2nd grade and school is very important to us. I would like for her to be around as many military kids as possible, the post here in huntsville is more civilian than military so there is not a lot of kids that r military in her school. Is the post large, we were at ft hood prior to him being sent to korea and i loved that there was so much being offered on post for families. I have been on the computer looking up alot about the surrounding area and it seems like there is stuff to definately keep us busy. :) I am so looking forward to the cooler weather. Well thanks again for responding.

Hi Jessica,

This is our second time being stationed here. It is by far the best duty station We have been at. Colorado Springs is a really nice town with a lot to do especiall for kids. It is very beautifull and the post is really nice. We have never lived on post but I have seen the housing and it looks nice. I know a lot of the housing is new. The schools are also really good. If I can answer any questions let me know and good luck with your move.
