We are heading to Gulfport, but are coming from overseas, so I have a ton of questions. What is the on base housing like? My husband is an O-4. What about the elementary schools for the kiddos? And what is life generally like in Gulfport? Thanks for any advice or input!

Hi Danielle! When are you heading to Oki? WHat age do you need the preschool for? My almost 4 year old goes to Okinawa Montessori school and we have loved it! I can give you the contact info if you would like. Honestly, OMS is one of the biggest things we will miss about the island. So, have you been to Oki before? If you have any questions, please feel free to ask away! And thank you for the information on Gulfport!

I lived and taught there pre-Katrina. Most Biloxi,Ocean Springs, Gulfport schools, and d'iberville/St. Martin schools are good. For the most part, the public schools there were struggling and lacked (as compared to state standards in Texas). Good family area, very laid back. Good news! It's not quite as hot/humid as Okinawa--almost, but not quite. I'm trying to find a good preschool in Okinawa, as we are pcs-ing there from Hill in UT. Praying we can handle the weather trasition. Good luck in your pcs!

Gulfport is really pretty. We live in D'Iberville and we like it. They have all kinds of new shops and places to eat. Biloxi has the casinos if you like that kind of thing. I haven't had a chance to go since I spent my pregnancy here and didn't want to be around all the smoke. We really love going to New Orleans. Its only about an hour away from us. We have a lot of fun. And it seems like someone is always planning a group trip you could tag along on.

Okay! So, do you like the Gulfport area? Is there a lot to do? I know it is hard with a two month old! When my daughter was 2 months old, we were in Michigan and it was so cold, we barely left the house. At least we won't be cold! Thanks for the tips!

There was no waiting list when we got here for housing but I would try to call ahead just in case. No I don't have school age kids. My son is not even two months old yet but I have a friend with a child in elementary school and she really likes the school he goes to.

Good to hear about housing!! Did you all have a long wait to get on base housing? I am SO excited to be close to New Orleans. Can't wait to take the family to Cafe du Monde and to see if some of other hang outs are still there! If you don't mind me asking, do you have school age kids? If so, which school do they attend?

Awesome. We've been stationed here for about a year now. Base housing is really nice. Everything was rebuilt after Katrina. The town is still a little run down in some places from the storm but picks back up more and more every day. Plus I love living so close to New orleans!
