Hi Samantha, it really depends on what your family is like and what you want to do. If you want to be in "civilization" you may want to look at Yucca Valley. Its a 30 min ride to work for DH but you will be by wally, home depot, etc. Plus you will be about 30 min away from major shopping and activity areas of palm springs, rancho mirage, cathedral city. If you prefer base then I would say to look at trying to get housing on the main side of base by the commissary. We are in ocotillo heights by the golf course and it's so far from everything. The house is nice but the hospital, commissary, px youth center and cdc and everything else is far away from us. Plus the newer housing they've put up by the commissary marine palms, Joshua heights area are larger from what I hear and they already have fences installed. I haven't been inside any of the new housing on the other side of the base but from what I've seen outside they are really nice. You also have 801 and aztec that are off base Nyke mentioned and they are getting a pool and gated supposedly. We lived in 801 the second time we were stationed here and it was pretty nice too. They are across the street from lucky park and the city pool and 29 jr high and 29 elem as well. Sorry I rambled but if you have any questions shoot me an msg. This is my third time being stationed here and fourth year here this time.

Hi there! I have month-to-month rentals in 29 Palms. They are very nice, I have lived here my whole life and I will tell you that I have lived here at Smoke Tree Villas for 3 years and I love it! It's close to base and town and everything is included in the price! You can look at the website at www.rent29palms.com! Good luck and welcome to the desert !

We are Army now, and if the opportunity came up for us to get there again (becoz they do have few Army stationed there) we would not turn it down! Palm springs is just an hour away, so are the Outlet malls!

Hi, well let me tell you. 29 Palms can be a bit different for most people. It is literally dessert! Nothing around, Walmart is a 30 minute drive! But on the bright side, it is very family orientated. We left there in 2005 when my hubby got out the Corps, and honestly, we'd love to go back. It's quiet, but can be boring I guess. Oh but as for your question, I'd suggest you live in housing. They have some on-base housing (of course) as well as off-base (military) housing not too far, about 3 miles from the main gate.. if they're still there. The off-base military housing is Townhouse style with apt. type parking. There's an elementary school right down the street from them. There are elementary schools on base also. I can't remember where the jr.high was but the High school was a bit far (busing distance). There's a lot of duplexes around but remember, it is dessert. It may look dusty and dirty in a lot of places (as far as the people too) but if you can't get base housing, try to get with a realtor to rent a house that other military folk own. ((suggestions)) Good luck, lucky!!
