PCSing to Norfolk in 1 month (Navy Wife) any suggestions, advice et cetera HELP

Abigail Brightwell may I ask what townhomes you live in? We are pcsing to va next month and I'm looking for a safe area!

We live in Virginia beach - - found our townhouse rental LAST minute. We live on the line between Virginia Beach and Chesapeake and so far it is Pretty convienent to EVERYTHING. I feel very comfortable and safe here, never any problems...I have never lived in Base Housing. Suffolk is a nice area - it is a commute to the bases though.

also, my neighbors son has autism and he has just been stationed at Le jeune but she stayed here because her son is doing well with his autism program in the yorktown schools. My son attends Bruton High in yorktown and is in the AP program working towards an advanced diploma so i love the schools out here..

i didnt know that about yorktown, because we dont live on base, we live outside the base. if those were the qualifications we wouldnt be allowed to live on their either as my husband is not an E-4. Even so i dont know if that is the case because our neighor who is also an E-6, was offered housing on the weapons station but he refused it, so there is probably more to that. We live outside the base in the goverment housing, we live in hamilton redoubt and our neighbors are from all rates and ranks. im sorry i wasn't clear honey. You would want to look up Lincoln Military housing, thats where we live, its right outside the base.

Did your husband ask for a sponsor from his new command? Or maybe you can contact the new commands ombudsman for more information. Also request a welcome aboard package. We have been stationed in the area since 2005 and have never lived in military housing. Try contacting the housing office for the area to ask about the flooding issues. Good luck to you.

Tah thank you for the follow up with this information. I looked at a website that read that E-4 and below are required to live on post at Yorktown. Everyone else has to live out in town...my husband is a E-6 . I will call out there this week to verify if this site is legitimate. To everyone I will not be living in Norfolk....I do plan to live somewhere in VA except...I was told to avoid Newport News , and Portsmouth VA. My 10 year old son is high functioning Autism so I am looking for a great school or alternative for him. My daughter has no special needs and I want a good high school for her.

My husband is stationed at NOB but we live out in Virginia Beach, I've come to love it here. It's a short drive to the beach, lots to do with the kids. There is military housing close by us that looks really nice. I believe that it is called Midway Manor.

we also used to stay in Va beach and i did like it, we lived a stones throw from the beach righrt off birdneck road and the only reason we moved bac this way is because he was paying more than double for his apt when we got married then i was in my townhouse, so i moved with him after we were married until the lease was up and leased my townhome out and then we moved bac to N.N into my townhouse which was in a nice area, bigger and cheaper. If i didnt have that we would have stayed in Va. Beach..

We are currently in Virginia Beach, i must say that i do really like it here, we are in base housing though. Although i can't tell you much about Norfolk housing, i will say that you would be best not sending your children to public school there, as its not the best. Virginia Beach schools are wonderful, and have many programs to help all kids to succeed. So, depending on where your husband is going to be stationed, if he would not mind a commute, i would say to try your best at not living in Norfolk. There are some great places, but also some not so great ones as well... I have a friend who is also stationed here with her husband, i could ask her where some good areas of Norfolk would be if you need to stay in the area.

Good luck on your PCS, we will be PCSing to Washington state as of Dec. 6th, but have enjoyed our stay here in Virginia Beach...

i dont live in norfolk, i live about 45 minutes away in navy housing at yorktown naval weapons center. we have 2000 sq ft 4 bedroom 3 bath. I dont like norfolk, they have nice areas but for the most part the areas look rundown, now the actual housing looks nice i rode through before and its close to base if that is where is going to be stationed. virginia beach has alot of nice areas but is more expensive because its closer to..well ..the beach...lol. Thats an area you may want to try. i dont know suffolk that well and its not terribly far. I also dont care for norfolk schools so you may want to consider that, va beach schools are better, i love the schools my children attend in yorktown and husband doesnt mind the commute.
