Places to live near Naval Station Norfolk

My daughter got orders for Virginia (navy) she has a one week old baby and ask me to help her try and find safe areas and good places to rent. Any suggestions??

We live in Virginia Beach in a new complex called Belmont at Providence. It about 20 minutes from Naval Station Norfolk & the drive not bad in the morning. We use to live in Norfolk & I don't recommend it.

Navy Housing in Norfolk has all the latest information. They know where the good areas are and can give you that information. If per chance they can't help, call Navy Relief at the Norfolk Navy Base. They are there to help Navy personel in any way they possibly can. They also love helping Navy dependants. They are probably on line.

ok a couple things....I lived in Norfolk for 11 months broke our lease due to safety reasons. I will NEVER live there again, however lol We purchased our home here in VA beach ummm almost 5 years ago, and have had issues here as well. its everywhere but NORFOLK IS A NEGATIVE for me personally. Ok so another thing check with fleet and family, definately!! also when my husband was stationed in Germany for his 6 month deployment i went to visit him, we stayed at the Navy Lodge there in germany, we met a lot of very nice people in the breakfast room, i learned that these people were there for months waiting on their orders to go through, and its reasonably priced. check into the navy lodge, my husband was at little creek and the navy lodge is on base. I know nothing about NOB i take my dogs to the vet there, and when my husband deploys he flys in and out of there but i got lost in that huge "city" and never want to do that again. just some ideas to check into. good luck and good luck in Guam...how fun!! one suggestion for you about Guam...Experience it!! Enjoy it!! Explore it!! Most likely you will hate it because its something different, nothing will seem real but think of the stories and memories u will enjoy with him. I AM SO JEALOUS!!

They have listings of all the apartments in the area. They can email it to you.
I have lived in Norfolk for over 10 years and never had any issues.

Yes you could check into base housing however when we first got stationed here for the second time there was a waiting list of I want to say about 3 months or so and I believe Kelsey is only gonna be in the area for 3 months. Base housing is great though if you can get in than you will be close to the commisary and NEX as well. Moving always stinks and being in an area for a short amount time is even worse. I hope that you are finding some information on places to live.

Honestly, I would suggest trying to get base housing. We we stationed at NAS Oceana last year and we looked everywhere for reasonably priced well maintained apartments, sorry to say there are not many. I knew several people who lived in base housing and loved it!

Look up the address to the rental office and plug it into www.mylocalcrime.com and you will see what happens in the area. There are some decent parts, if you can find an apartment complex tucked back away from the main stream it's better. We just bought a house last year in Norfolk and we don't worry about locking our cars at night in our neighborhood or letting our oldest walk to the bus stop on her own. You can also check the sex offenders site if you have children of your own. Good Luck! If you can't find something ask the command about short term base housing.

the base is in the zip code of 23505 so the apartments in that area I don't know alot about so that is going to be hit or miss. Zip code 23502 is a good area it's Military, VB Blvd, Lake Taylor area. 23518 is going to be the Little Creek area which is also good but not all of it so you'd have to see the surround areas. Than 23503 is close to the base as well that is gonna be Ocean View/Chesapeake Blvd area so that's kinda iffy too. Hope this helps you some. If you have any questions let me know

I basically just googled Naval Station Norfolk Apartments and you might be able to find something more than what I found but this lists every apartment under the sun :)

Honestly there IS nice apartments in Norfolk and in good areas. Norfolk covers a very large area. I can't think of the names right now but there is apartments on the corner of Little Creek Rd and Azalea Garden and there is also apartments off of Shore Dr. across from the Little Creek Base. Both of these areas are perfectly fine and safe. I would stay away from the apartments on Little Creek Rd closer to Wards Corner (not good). There IS a nice apartment complex on Little Creek across from the Neighborhood Walmart as well. Mariner's Watch off of Chesapeake Blvd might be okay now...they have cleaned that area up ALOT the past few years. Next time I'm out I'll try to check out what the names are on the other ones I've mentioned. Good Luck in your apartment hunt and I'm pretty sure they should all have military clauses around here.

Thank You for the info Andrea. VA Beach might be one of the places we keep in mind considering its not too far. When we lived in Portsmouth it wasn't bad, but I don't think it's somewhere I want to be again. Price isn't too much of a concern and 3 months isn't too long. I just want to make sure this time we aren't living 5 miles from the nearest projects. When we first lived in Portsmouth we were living with 2 other men in the Navy. The nice house was positioned right between two questionable areas of Portsmouth. I'm not worried about the lease as long as there is a miliarty clause, which will definitely be something we will need. Our last apartment had the military clause we got out of our lease after only 1 month in the lease with a copy of his orders. I would almost live there again if it were not for the tunnel traffic. I will look into Kempsville, have completely forgot about the area. Very pretty place in some parts. Thanks again!

I honestly would not live anywhere in Norfolk. I know quite a few people who do, and they say it is not a nice place to live. It will probably be difficult to find somewhere that will allow only a 3 month lease. No matter where you live there will be traffic, whether it be a tunnel, 564 or Hampton Blvd, it all sucks. Depending on the price range you want to stay in and if somewhere would allow you to only have a 3 month lease, Virginia Beach is typically higher priced, but the Kempsville area is decently priced. Chesapeake has the Greenbrier area that is nice. These are the more populated areas as well. I currently live in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake, if you find something and have any questions about the area just let me know!
