I am an Army wife and mother to two. We are currently stationed in NY, though our home town is in Washington State.

I have been thinking a lot about joining the Reserves/Active Duty lately(the last year or so), as a way for me to further serve my country, finish my college degree (without loans) and to help the family position. My question is - Have any of you joined after getting married and having kids? What is it like? are you able to be stationed with your spouse, even if you are reserves and not AD?

We don't have a lot of family in this area (or any at all) for support during my training, should we decide to go this route, and there is the very large possibility/probability that my husband will be deploying to Afg for a year (or so) in the spring of 2011. Any advice/support/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It is difficult to have both parents in the military. They don't always try to only deploy one of you at a time and if both of you deploy then someone else has to take care of your children while both of you are gone. I have seen many dual soldier couples that make it work and many that don't. Talk to a recruiter and see what they can offer you but at the same time, remember to take whatever they say with a handful of salt (not just a pinch) since they are all about getting you sworn in!

Well, I haven't joined.. Only b/c I have a physical disability that would keep me from passing the Physical (nothing major, but it would still keep them from allowing me to join). I have always wanted to join, though.

I think it's great that you want to serve!! As long as it's something that you and your husband can agree on, then I say go for it!

Um, my parents were both Air Force, but they did get stationed together. They went wherever the higher rank was supposed to go (in this case it was my mom), but my dad still had to go TDY to Korea for a year w/o my mom and sisters.

I'm pretty sure that goes for all branches, but whether it also depends on if you're AD or Reserves, I don't know. Hopefully someone will be able to better answer your questions. I mainly just wanted to show some support. I think it's wonderful that you want to do that! Good luck to you!
