YORK COUNTY HANDS DOWN HAS THE BEST SCHOOLS  I HAVE A 13YR OLD AT TABB MIDDLE AND MY 9 YEAR OLD GOES TO BETHEL MANOR ELEM WALKING DISTANCE OR THE BUS PICKS UP... I do believe that even though you are coast guard you CAN live on base..You might want to call Bethel and find out..I am almost positive!

We are coast guard and from what my husband has said there is no housing for us so we would be on our own.   It seems like york county must have a really good school system from what I keep hearing but also expensive.  My husband seems to be leaning towards gloucester but we still aren't sure.  Thanks for the info

Hi Welcome to the neighborhood *soon*. I haved lived in this area off and on for the past 13 years. I have one middle schooler and 2 elementary. I have lived in NN, York County and Williamsburg. Are you living in base housing, rent or buying?

Gloucester is more rural.  While it is beautiful, I don't know if that is something you would want if you have young children.  I just looked up the school information and the schools are rated pretty high.  Choosing between Gloucester and Williamsburg, I think, will be a matter of preference.  Williamsburg is part of James City County, which covers a pretty large area.  So you could feesibly live in the suburbs around Williamsburg and still have ready access to all of the things that Williamsburg has to offer.

My husband went to Coast Guard A School in Yorktown. We had an apartment in Williamsburg and I LOVED the area. It is home to Busch Gardens and a water park that I can't remember the name to and we were able to get Season's Passes through MWR. We only spent 3 months of the summer there and didn't have kids yet so I have no idea about the schools. VA Beach has A LOT of traffic in the summer!!!

Rebecca sorry your hubby has to leave you and your daughter. I wish i had some tips for you but for us its the only life we know. Since they were born, he has had to leave us for months at a time on a regular basis. I just do what I can and I don't sweat the small stuff. We keep in touch daily with emails, phone or texting. I make sure to include him in everyday conversations with the kids like "I bet daddy would like that", "we need to tell daddy that funny story when we talk to him next", etc. I just try to keep him with us and pray a lot. I hope you and your daughter's transition is as smooth as can be. Take care!

My hubby is going to be in Norfolk soon. He was just talking about Yorktown, wondering how far is was from Norfolk. After he has settled there a bit I'll let you know what he can find out. We are staying here in TX. His PCS was not anticipated for another several months. Somebody attached to a ship broke their ankle. Sounds like you have some experience being away from your husband. Mine leaves late February, so maybe you send me some tips on how to get ready for his absence. My daughter is 4 and she has never had to live more than a month without Daddy. Hi, I live in Bethel Manor too.  York County has great schools.  Newport News schools are not that great.  Do you plan to live on base or out in town?  This is a great area with lots of stuff to do.  The only downside is the traffic in the summer because of Virginia Beach.  Let me know if there is anything else that I might be able to answer for you.

Hi, we just moved here to Hampton VA. We live in Bethel Manor. My middle child goes to the base school and we love it. My oldest goes to Tabb Middle school and we love that school also. I will say that if you can buy a GPS please please please buy one. HAHA...There are tons of fun stuff to do in the area. Contact me anytime if you want any information or just someone to talk to.
