Does anyone have a spouse in Bahrain? My husband is stationed over there until 2010. They do not allow families over there yet. So he is a Geo-bachelor. This is our longest deployment ever!!!! He has been gone for a year so far. I was just curious to see if anyone else was in a similar situation. Hang in there everybody and Happy New Year!

My son just told me last night he was going to Bahrian. I am very proud of him but my heart is breaking in pieces. One year without him. I just cant get over this empty and scared feeling already.

I appreciate the info and will pass it on to family as well.  When hubby isn't underway he'll be staying in a flat so we will be able to use skype and we'll see if it works on the boat.  Seeing him once in a while is better than not at all, especially for the little one.

No you do not need to purchase a Skype camera. I use the one built into my lap top and for my kids I just bought theirs at Walmart (it needs to have a microphone though). I do not know about on a ship. My husband uses his on land only, He has an apartment there. We do not have a skypeline and I am not familiar with Vonage. I like Skype because it is free, but my husband does not go to sea from Bahrain so if your husband is going to be living from a ship for a year I do not know how well it would work. All you need is an internet connection, skype account (download is free) and a web cam. You could test is out now before he leaves with family and friends. My kids use skype also to keep in touch with the grandparents. It is especially nice for the little ones, they can interact with daddy by playing pee a boo or with a stuffed animal. I hope I did not give you false hope by suggesting Skype. I do not know how it will work on a ship, but I think it is worth a try.

Okay Rogene, you just opened up a whole can of worms.  I checked out Skype and have a couple questions for you.  Do you need their web cam, we have one built in our computer and lap top?  Does it work on the ship?  Did you also get skypeline as a phone line for others to call on?  We were looking into Vonage but this seems much better.  Sorry to bombard you with all the questions and thanks in advance for the answers :)

There is something to be said about being gone so long, you do not have that coming and going which is very stressful. When your husband gets settled in Bahrain, look into getting Skype for both of you. (you might already have it) My husband and I are usually able to talk and see each other several times a week. It is great!!!

He reports Dec 09, but will leave for training Sept 09.  I'm hoping with him being gone for one long deployment it will be an easier adjustment for our 4 year old.  Right now hubby is underway two months, home two months.  We spend about two weeks on ethier side getting him back in a groove with or without daddy.  Such is the life of a military wife :)

Thanks for your replies ladies! My husband is in the Navy. Lynne, are you talking about Dec. 2009 or Dec 2008. It is good to know that others have gone through this and that we are not crazy for living apart for so long. He is visiting us next week though! We are all so excited!

My husband is headed over in December for a year.  What branch is your husband?  We're Coast Guard.

Sorry - I can't say that he is.  He was there in 2002 though - and PROMISED me that if he ever went back, I'd get to come and visit.  White sandy beaches....warm water....the photos were beautiful where my DH was.

I'm sorry you are separated for so long.  Makes our one year deployment look much more manageable.
