One of the side effects of anti-depressants is that they can actually make your depression worse - this is clearly stated in the warnings for the medecine. This is why it is imperative that regular therapy be used in conjunction with medication and that you be honest and forthright with your doctor about how you are feeling. If symptoms worsen instead of ease you should immediatly be switched to a different medication.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder 2 1/2 years ago. I've been on Effexor since the diagnosis and haven't gained any weight. In fact, I'd say it decreases my apetite. Your mental health is vital for you to be able to care for yourself and your baby. Get advice and second opinions but listen to the doctors. Good luck!

i would talk to yr doctor about going on something like zoloft, bcz my friend is on it and is doing just fine, hasn't gained weight. but when her mother was on fluextine [genertic form of prozac] she gained weight. so there is some antidepressents that can make you gain weight. but then again, everyones body is different.

I was on Fluoxetine and didn't gain weight. I actually lost all of my "pregnancy weight" within the first 6 months (30 lbs). No I didn't excersize regularly (a lot of slow gentle walking around the neighborhood and that was it because I was recovering from a c-section), I did eat healthy, although I ate a LOT. I was breastfeeding and had a voracious appetite. I also have a metabolic disorder that makes it tough for me to lose weight - I am not naturally "skinny". Although I will say, while I was down to my prepregnancy weight fairly quickly - my whole body composition had changed (Hips as wide as cows now!). As you said, each person is different!

More importantly if you are breastfeeding you need to make sure whatever you are taking won't affect your child. Also there are a lot of natural/herbal remedies you can use to help lift your mood. It is worth talking ot your doctor about these as well.

I had severe PPD - and was on anti depressants for just over ayear. In conjunction with regular therapy - it has really helped. Every medication you take - right down to your prenatal pills, has side effects. And depending on the anti-deppressant will depend on your side effects. I did not gain wait - but if I had more than two sips of wine or beer I would get a splitting headache. each pill is different, and each person is different.

The best thing you can do is discuss your concerns with your doctor.

I know it is difficult with a newborn, but also, excersize releases "good" homrones into your body helping to combat the depression. that should also help counteract anything else.

Taking care of your mental and physical health is one of the best things you can do for your child. If you aren't healthy you can't care for them properly.

good luck!

Hi Stephanie. My name is Christina and although I've never experienced post natal depression, I've been diagnosed with severe depression in the past. I've been taking anti-depressants for the last 8 or 9 years.

In my experience, yes, some anti-depressants do cause weight gain; however, there are many that do not. Discuss your concerns with your doctor and let him know your fears of gaining weight. It is a legitimate fear that can effect your recovery should it happen.

Please do not lose faith in medical science. I personally believe that anti-depressants are important for those who need them. Consider it this way.... Some diabetics take insulin for survival. Anti-depressants are your insulin.

Also, you need to take care of yourself for the sake of your family. Your little one needs his/her mom. If you can't do this for yourself, then do it for your child.

Good luck to you Stephanie. I honestly don't think I'd be here today if it weren't for my medication... Getting better takes patience and a lot of hard work. But you will heal. Have faith and be strong.

Christina
