I am looking for tips on how to handle a long car trip with my 4 year old by myself. I'm thinking of breaking it up into 2 days instead of going the whole 11 hours in one shot. Any ideas on car games or how to keep him from being fussy while I'm driving? HELP, I'm already stressed!

Before I went on vacation with my two VERY busy sons, I got them both backpacks and filled them with stuff from the dollar store: Coloring books, crayons, snacks, toys, etc. I secured the backpacks to the front seats for easy access. Everytime they opened their bags, a new activity would start. They hardly made a dent in their surprises bags before the drive was over.

i agree with Claudine, driving at night seems to be better for the child, maybe not us though...lol. Just put him in pjs, bring some small toys/books, and head out, he should sleep fine

My life saver (if you drink coffee that is) is I tend to travel as much as I can at night, while my daughter sleeps. That way I am not stressed with her awake and traffic is better. You are tired during the day but no worse then I was when she was a baby. I also got her a portable dvd player (which she only gets on long car trips (+2 hours) since I have family spread out all over the place and we make several long trips a year.

Don't go for the DVD player. So many parents have gone that route and now the kids can't travel without it. I moved with my son when he was 2 yrs old and he drove in the Uhaul with me! We also just moved to TX from VA and drove 1800 miles. Yeah, he's 12 now, but still...my sister looked up cities along the ride and gave him little "gifts" at those stops. He was excited to get to each place and the little prizes kept him occupied till the next stop.

I just got back from a 16 hour (2 day) car trip with my 2 year old son- had to go up 16 hours, attend a funeral, and then drive 16 hours home. The portable DVD player was my best friend- worked wonders for him. Lots of snacks, too! I also tried to let him have a few minutes of run around time whenever we needed to stop for gas, food, etc. He enjoyed our hotel stays- I let him ride the luggage cart, push the elevator, buttons, etc. Making him Mommy's helper seemed to keep him engaged and better behaved. Good luck!

I had a 10 hour trip with my daughter...I drove at night (I slept during the day, while she was at school) then we hit the road after dinner with the music she likes, a doodle pad, and a couple of her CD - Books. she fell asleep around her usual bedtime. I arrived around 4 am. fortunately she went back to sleep after checking into the hotel. I was a bit tired the next day, but it was hassle-free
