I am in Australia and they give the oral version here, I got it done for my daughter. I am very uneasy about vaccinations however after working in child care centres in a low rate vaccination area I have seen so many babies become very sick with rotavirus, it's just so dangerous. Plus when my daughter was 3 weeks old she caught some kind of gastro bug, I couldn't get her to breast feed, by the time I got her to the Doctor two hours later she was almost limp from dehydration and my Doctor was ready to call an ambulance, thankfully she drank some electrolytes and perked up a bit, but it scared the shit out of me how quickly they can go down hill.

No, it was in the US, because I don't think they even give it here. Well, maybe in other provinces they do, but not here in Alberta.
It was Rotarix. Here's an article about it.

It would be very sad to see a 4 week old so sick and hooked up to all those machines. :( I'm sorry you had to go through that with your little one! I always worry those first 2 months when they haven't had any vaccines yet and anything, even a little cold, can hit them so hard. My older son had croup when my baby was only a month old and I was so scared of the baby getting it because I knew it would land us in the hospital. Thank goodness, he didn't.

My daughter got rota b4 she was old enough to get the shot (which she has now had)... it was AWFUL... She was soooo sick. So pathetic too. She was 4.5 weeks old and hooked up to all kinds of stuff. Talk about putrid too... man! Our 3 day hosp stay was less than ideal. =(
I haven't heard about a recall Becky, that might just be a Canada thing... hmm....

Apparently there are two brands of the Rotavirus vaccine and one was just recalled recently, I think because it contained some pig virus or something. They don't offer it here in Calgary, so my kids haven't gotten it. I could probably get it for them if I asked for it, but so far, it's not included in the routine ones, and I haven't asked for it because honestly, rotavirus doesn't really worry me that much.

I didn't know until a few minutes ago that there was any controversy on this vaccine. My daughter has gotten it at all 3 of her checkups so far (orally), and sucks it down like it's the most delicious thing ever, lol. BUT... I was just reading some ladies comments on an American Baby post on Facebook, the post was about to vaccinate or not to vaccinate- and a couple ladies said the Rotovirus vaccine is bad news (no explanation as to why). Anyway, reading that reminded me of this thread. Anyone know anything about this? Hmm... maybe I should google it...

Good luck Jen! Glad it went well, and I hope there are no reactions to it! Thank you for the update too! :-)

well..we opted to get the vaccine...it was an oral one so it wasnt bad for him to take..will have to wait and see if theres any reaction..he has to have 2 more doses at 4 and 6 months..will let you all know if there is any issues so you can pass along to others so they can know more..

Thanks! =) The lysol came with a big can, but I think you can get in the trial stuff at target! Sanitizer- I get the trials at bath and body works, that way they have a great scent to them! =) They have sales a lot where you can get them for $1. Mine even has a nifty holder thing that straps to the diaper bag!
I have the Fresh Market Apple Pocket-bac... LOVE IT! ($1 right now!)

Jessica,
I have to say you are just full of great ideas! I never would have thought to carry lysol but have been known to squeeze sanatizer on a wipe and use that! I might have to add sanatizer and lysol (where do you get trial sizes?) to my friends diaper cake for her baby shower! I also might have to add a lysol trial size to my purse if I can find them!

Shannon- I carry lysol around with me in a trial can! If it looks unsanitary to me, I will change her in my trunk (lid open of course...) or the back seat! I have sanitizer EVERYWHERE and I'm not afraid to use it! LOL! =)

Hmmm...I have no experience with it and sad to say I'm not sure if my son has had the vaccine or not. There are so many vaccines and boosters that I can't keep it all straight. Jessica that is sad about your little one, I am a bit of a germaphobe and feel that all public changing facilities should provide sanitary wipes!

yes, and i suggest it!
My daughter got the nasty virus when she was 4.5 wks old. Lovely Babies R Us changing table (and yes I had a pad down). B/C she was so young they had to test her for meningitis which meant a 3 day stay at LeBonheur Children's Hospital! Poor baby had 5 sticks b/c she pulled 1 IV out and the dumb nurse pulled out the other. She was too young for the shot, but she has had it (the shot) since and she has been fine. But all kids are different.
