my baby is ten weeks old and he doesnt turn when you talk to him

he startles at loud noises but if you talk to him while holding him or sat next to him he doesnt react does this mean he cant hear us talking?

also he was five weeks early could this be a cause?

Hi Kayleigh, my son is an ex 23 weeker and after finally bringing him home at 6 months we realised the same thing. He too would not look at you when you spoke to him or turn to the sound but we new he could hear us because his eyes or expression on his face would change. We had a few hearing tests and failed the first couple and the Doctor said it was common for the preemie babies to fail the first couple of tests depending on where they developmentally. My son had only just passed his hearing test @ 3 mths ago and he was 15mths or 11mths corrected at the time. I know there is a big difference and circumstances with our two stories but you will know if there is something wrong.

thankyou
harley was only in hospital for a week and two days and while there he didnt respond to anything when touched he did nothing all through his health checks he did nothing his heel pric test didnt bother him and niether did the drip being put in his hand
he had numerous biliruebin tests through heel prick and only the last one the day before he came out of hospital caused him to stir so i guess the hearing is just the same as all that
now he smiles when you touch him and crys when he has his jabs
i have noticed recently that he does respond slightly now and is starting to watch while you talk, he still doesnt really turn to see whos speaking but the increase in response s obviously a good sign so im a little happier now

:) YW! My son also had 6 ear infections in 4 months when he was 8 months til he was a yr. And he even busted an ear drum and his hearing is 100% A-OK today! No tubes either!

My son didn't turn to look at me or anyone when you spoke til he was like 4 months or more. I dunno if it's really preemie issue. I just always figured it's cuz they were young. My sons hearing is just fine now and he is 21 months.

did the hospital check his hearing before he was discharged from the hospital? My daughter was the same way for a little while. One of the nurses said some babies are just like that for a while. My daughter was 6 weeks early & is now 8 months old. Not sure if it is a premie issue.
