Heb 12:11 (NIV) No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
It's quite true discipline, correction or rebuke never seem pleasant when they are happening and yet so beneficial. I think back to when I was a kid and I'd get told off by my parents, teachers, grandparents, whomever and I would sulk and hate it, but upon reaching adulthood & certainly having come into parenthood I see how much I benefited, and that just being in the physical realm of things, how much more should it be in the spiritual.
Why should we scorn at the discipline that God gives us, whether through his word, through his spirit or through a leader or minister he has placed before us. Should we not want to develop and grow in the Lord, if we were driving somewhere and took the wrong road surely we'd want someone to set us in the right direction, even asking for directions & being thankful and joyful that we are back on tract. I see the Lords direction in the same way, I will receive it gladly, I don't want to spend lots of time and energy heading the wrong, and I’d sooner get turned around right away, heading the way I should be going. And how much better that others could learn from my mistake and know not to take that turn (sign posted so others would learn).
Heb 12:7 (NIV) Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.
When God disciplines us and puts us back on tract He is truly showing his love for us. If he didn't, love us he wouldn't bother with us, like an absent father he would show no interest in our well being, but God isn't an absent father, when we come to him and ask him to come into our lives, he will .Then he will let us know that he is there, by leading us & guiding us, by instructing, correcting and rebuking us and not only that, but by encouraging us and commending us with a "Well done my good and faithful servant".
My heartbeat is to be more like Christ, he was perfect.....I'm not there yet, but every time God speaks to me, teaches me, leads me, corrects me, puts me on the right tract I know I am coming closer and closer to my goal if I take onto what he says and where he leads. I won't scorn the Lord discipline, for without it I'd be headed into the desert instead of the land that flows with milk and honey.
So if you are faced with Gods discipline, remember it's because he loves you and has an interest in you as one of his legitimate heirs who will receive their inheritance.
