I was told when I was diagnosed in 1994 that Lupus was not hereditary. I was reassured this when i got pregnant with both of my children in 99 and 01. Now reading some of your posts i see that you have several family members that also have lupus. My mother had MS and I was also told that that is not related, but many of you have relatives with ms. Do the doctors just not know enough yet????

Lupus can be hereditary, a predisposition to the disease can then be brought out by medication, floressent lighting, a virus, stress.. most websites on Lupus will explain this. My mother had Lupus, I have Lupus, my 26yr daughter has Lupus.. some of her children will likely have Lupus. Your doctor just didnt know any better,, and if it was a GP and not a specialist then thats probably why you got the wrong information. Make sure when your children get older you watch for symptoms.. and let them know the family history (you) so they will be better informed and watch for symptoms themselves when they get older. If caught early good medications like methotrextate can keep the disease at bay and let us lead "normal" lives. Good luck ~Sue

My mom has had lupus sence she was a little girl and then in 2004 my sister was told that she has it too..I don't know if the doctors know what they are talking about. The doctor that told my sister that she had it says it is very rare that two family member will have it. He said that it is uncommon..I would think that sence my mom has it that we all would have a chance of getting it..But I dont know...

Some dont there are drs out there that will tell you that it is hereditary. Thankfully I had good drs. It took forever for them to realize what was going on. Look up information yourself. Doing research myself is how I found out. I was the only one in my family that had this illness and I wanted to know more. Since my diagnosis my sister and aunt have also been diagnosed with SLE. It effects everyone differantly. Look at differant websites to see what u can find.

I believe that the doctors just don't know enough yet. My Grandmother, my Mother, my Aunt, my Uncle, my Brother and I all have SLE. I have a Great Uncle who has DLE and an Aunt who died from MS. With that kind of family history i find it difficult to believe that lupus is not hereditary. The specialist I see used to treat both my Grandmother and my Mum. As you said so many people with lupus also have other family member with it as well. To me, with so much evidence of it being hereditary it really needs to be investigated. So yeah I think the doctors need to look into it.
