Sleep training your baby?

Read a lot about how important it is to "sleep train" our babies so that they will learn to sleep on their own. I was wavering on whether to do it or not but gave up in the end as I couldnt bear to let my baby cry! Also found from my conversations that most Malaysian moms dont bother with sleep training! Just wondering whether this is true! Did you sleep train your baby? If so, how long before you succeeded?
