My son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. (today) I kow that I am not the only mother struggling with this. My son is a loving boy but has issues staying focused, listening, talking back, and has bouts of anger. He was put on Concerta. Besides the medication what other adjustments have you made that seem to make things easier for both you and your child?

I would totally agree about the food - on Concerta, his appetite will be depressed, so making sure the food he does eat is natural and nutritional is a major priority. I also believe in letting kids take responsibility for their actions. So laying out a rewards/consequences program for ADHD kids is imperative. They need structure, consistency, and they also need to know upfront what the expectations/consequences are. We use a behavior program for my 10 year old son, and it really helps.

Thank you so much! We already eat healthy but I should cut out the sugar in drinks. I am also going to try the Flax Seed Oil vitamins!!

I changed my son's diet to all natural. Doesn't have to be organic, but just natural. Nothing fake. No dyes, preservatives, artificial flavorings or sugars. It did help a lot...however I think my son doesn't have true ADHD, I think he has something else as well. But I can definitely tell the difference if he has "yucky" food. ADHD kids are very sensitive to these chemicals. I was also giving my son organic Flax Seed Oil vitamins for omega 3 nutrition for the brain. I would also say trying to stay on a schedule with physical activity everyday will help.
