Like Terra says...mood and appetite are the two big ones with this med. I believe my son will have to be switched too as well - he's at max dose and its effectiveness is almost nil now. Of course he has been on it for over 5+ years and is reaching puberty. It is one of the better meds on the market right now and should hopefully work wonders on your child. Good luck and hang in there!

My son (8) has taken 5mg for about six months. He was on Vyvanse before, but was losing weight and had stomach aches so we made the switch. It works well, but seems to wear off right at the end of the school day so we keep a somewhat strict routine in the evenings and that seems to keep the agressive behavior and frustration to a minimum when he knows what to expect. Good luck.

Quoting Nancy:

so far she on it for 5 days now and I don't see any differance. does it take this long?

They started my daughter on the 5mg, but she needed the 10mg. We did up her to 20 mg at one point just to see, and it was too much. But she has been on 10mg for almost a year now and it is a HUGE difference. I can tell if I forget to give her the meds in the morning!! BIG DIFFERENCE!! Maybe your daughter just needs a higher dosage??

My daughter, age 7, has been on Focalin XR for almost 1 year now. It took a few months to figure out the rigth dosage for her. As this was her first ADHD medication. BUT WE LOVE IT!!! She has not had any weight loss, she eats normally, she is dong 100% better in school with her behavior and thus her academics are better. Her reading level has improved from 1.2 to 4.3!!! And there are no mood swings, and she sleeps at night!! ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT!! I would want anything more!

My son has been on Focalin XR for about a year and a half...I noticed an immediate difference. I don't know for sure, but I think he responded right away within a few days. I have tried other meds and when after a week he isn't responding, I have changed them. I took him off Focalin for just five days to try something else and went back to the Focalin. He is only six and is on 30mg in the morning and 10mg at 2, but it is great. Brought home straight A's this nine weeks!!!

I have never used that one. I hope it works. I was told all the different meds are basically the same they just work differently with each child. Please update so I know how it works in case we ever change to that. Right now we use Concerta.

My son is now on vyvanse 40mg, it works alot better than the focalin it stays in their system longer its like a time release. Focalin will have to be changed when they come immuned to it. Trust me I have been through this 6 years now. YOu might want to fethink the focalin and start right away the the vyvanse. Its a much beeter med with more results and faster results..
THanks
Laurie

Yes my son was on it for a very long time then he switched to Trileptal as he got older...Its a great med. til they get immunes to it then you will have to swtch meds again. Unless that is a difference between grls and boys....

I hope it helps her. My son could not take it because it made him extremely aggressive, he was on it for less than a week before we had it changed. He has been several. He started on Adderall when he was 4, when he got up to 20mg we had the aggression problems, went to concertta and eventually maxed out, added strattera to help with evenings and mornings, and now we are on vyvanse and strattera. As these chikdren grow the doses and meds will continue to change and it is often frustrating for the parents as well as the child during these adjustments. I am sure you will find what works for her. I hope she does well

My daughter was on it for a bit but it didn't work for her at all. It had a horrible affect on her mood, which is tenuous at best since she's in that adolescent stage. We are now in the process of working thru the next med (aderall). The focalin attempt was very easy to tell it wasn't working for her the change was dramatic and she was only on it about 10 days. I know its hard, everyone is different, it can be very much trial and error. Good luck!

My son (16) is currently on Focalin XR 20mg. He was on Vyvanse before, but he lost too much weight. The Focalin does not work as well, but he's now at a good weight.
Nancy - I assume you are gradually upping the dosage until you find the right one, so that being the case, you will probably not notice a difference this soon. It's a little tough to compare because everyone responds differently to the different medications. Be patient. You may have to try a few different meds to get the right one for your daughter. This is my son's 2nd medication. While my daughter tried three over a period of several months before we settled on one - weighing the benefits with the side effects. I have heard of other people trying even more than that before they find the right one. So be patient.

My son has been on focalin xr for 2 years now. Before that i had to change up about every 9 to 12 mths, were he got immune to them. He has been on meds since he was 6 and now he is 12. But he is doing good with it now.

My son was on that for 4 years just watch for it wearing off my son built a immunity for it and had to keep upping the dose but it does work really well. all adhd meds are like that though and watch for mood and appetite those two are really common. If you have any questions just let me know i probably can answer them.
