Hi, my 14 year old son has ADD. He is very chatty. He can stay on the same subject for an hour, but give 1,000 different versions of it. Anyone else experience this? I adopted him from Russia when he was 2 years old.

My son talks non stop as well!!  We have learned that we just have to tell him to stop.  His teacher said that he also does it in class and she has started saying "red light"  She does it with all the kids....  It seems to work really well.

This is so normal. I have caught myself telling my 8 year old to finally shut up which she doesn't then I say lets play a game of who canbe the quietest of all but she still talks. I have finally learned to hear her but not consentrate 100%. It is not good but I have to be able to do more then listen to a child who rambles forever. I love her but like her teacher has said she needs to be reminded to listen more then talk. And Yes I know I was wrong to tell her to shut up so I catch myself from doing it now.

Our son is 10 and talks non stop. He is on a low dose of Focalin(15mg) and it really helps him focus at school. In fact he is getting mostly A's. We don't give it to him on the weekends or in the summer- so we deal with the chatter. We are constantly telling him to "take it down a notch" as he is also a loud talker! On the upside -he'll probably make a great attorney someday!

Quoting Pamela:

My son is 8 years old with ADHD and talks non-stop, I mean.... NEVER stops!! Sometimes talks in his sleep and it doesnt matter where we are or what we are doing, he's talking...... and he is sooo loud!! You would think that he is almost def cause when he talks it's like he hollers! He ALWAYS has a solution for EVERYTHING and has to have the last word and it drives me insane!! He is on Concerda xl. We ONLY give it to him for school and deal with it on weekends (exception for church) and Summer.... somehow.. lol.. It makes him lose weight but it seems all the meds. do, and moody.

Hi,

My son is 10 and has Sensory Intragration Disorder, ADHD and PDD. He talks all the time too! And sometimes I really believe he cant stop! And he talks soooo loud too...No matter how many times I tell him "stop talking so loud, use your inside voice" he cant do it!!! The child doesnt know what whispering means. lol...My son has to have the last word too and it totally drives me insane! Expecially when he gets going with his brother who is 4. They both want to have the last word!

My son never shuts up (at times) also. Bubble gum and MP3 player with head phones work well for us.

I think that also applies to ADHD cause my 11 yr old does the same thing.. I always rediect him by telling him to stop and to take a deep breath. And change the subject or move on to something else. It drives us crazy. Good luck. Remenber to breath too

It is a real eye-opener and amazing to see such similarities in our children. I have said so many similar things mentioned here to my son as well. Also, I have begun to just let him ramble, because I feel so bad if I tell him to stop talking. So now I am doing that "selective hearing" too. I also try to interject and change the subject, but it absolutely never ever sticks with him. He goes right back to his topic and rambles, and rambles, and on and on. Oh my!!!!

Hallo Carla

We have 2 boys with ADD. One of the characteristics of ADD and ADHD is the child's continious talking. Sometimes it drives my husband and me totally insane, but as we have researched all the symptoms know how to deal with it.

He is totally healthy and normal in that respect and enjoy the most intersting conversations you are going to experience with this highly intelligent individual called your son. Be proud and hang onto every moment.

Regards

Anet
