Hi everyone - I just want to find out if anyone else has/had their kids on Focalin XR. Is there anything that I need to watch for, etc. My 5 and a half year old was just put on it. Of course I got all the literature on it but would like some real world expierence.

thanks.

My Daughter doesn't react quite like that, she gets distracted alot easier, and can't concentrate. She gets kind of nasty with her little sister in the morning (hitting, yelling, saying mean things) if she does not get her meds quick enough. Hope that helps!

When your Focalin starts to wear off what was the behaviour you were noticing? Quill has been doing things that he normally doesn't do, he hit his sister and broke the bathroom mirror throwing a sippy cup. Are these outbursts from the med wearing off - he's calmed down since then but we've started giving him Melatonin to help mellow him a bit. Just curious what you might have noticed..thanks again.

My 8 year old daughter has been on Focalin XR 10 Mg for 2 years, and sometimes it does wear off a little too early. Ask your Doctor if you can get a perscription for a low dose Ritalin, it has a short half life. I give this at 3 pm, so that she can focus on homework, and it is out of her system by 8 pm so she can go to bed. She has had no adverse side effects. I feel that this medication gave me my child back. Good Luck!

my son is seven and has been on focalin xr for the last two years he has had no side affects the only thing i have found is that after awhile we had to up to dose because it was wearing off to soon but now it has been working good for him although i was very skeptical about puting him on anything this med has not made him a zombie like some of the others do. he has been able to focus at school which was the reason we put him on this med and it worked for that but ever kid id diffrent hope it works well for him.

We had my son on Focalin XR, Focalin 2.5 mg and a different dosage the concertta and Strattera they all made him a different kid if I can give any advice its watch your son pay attention to the way he reacts and how he is different if you notice yourself losing your son take him off the med its just not worth it for a little better focus at school if nights are hell and your son is miserable. I put our story on another page about trouble with school it explains my sons problems with meds. Be encouraged though it isnt easy but just remember to advocate for your son. Do whats best for him thats all that matters!

Thanks, that's good to know. We're trying to teach him to swallow pills but he keeps chewing the frozen M&M's we're using. I've seen horror stories about Focalin out there, I'm glad it worked..

My son started on Focalin during his 3rd grade year. He was on it for about a year or so until they came out with the Daytrana Patch. He wouldn't swallow the pill, we had to sprinkle the stuff in applesauce and it was kind of a pain. He likes the patch much better, however I would rather he just swallow a pill. Anyway, he didn't really have a trouble with the Focalin, no side effects or anything.
