My second grade son is both.  I found the public school system to be absolutely useless in helping us.  As far as his ADHD inhibiting him at school is concerned, I have just told him that he needs to do it even if it's boring and he already knows it because in life, he needs to learn to fit in.

The only thing that I recommend is to ask them to give him extra work (I usually provide it) as a reward for completing the work that the class is doing.  I also try to supplement the school's curriculum at home with foreign languages, math, science, and music.  In the summer time, I let him go to academic camps for robotics and science, as a reward for doing well in school.

thanks for asking that qustion because my 6 year old son is the same way.  He is way above his class so I by books from the store and send them to school myself since they dont want to move him up.  John dose not like to do things twice eighter he masterd the states in one day and wont do it agin.  Were trying to just look for a good free charter school with great acadimics.

Ask if your school has a gifted program and how they determine if a child can participate in it. Then demand, in writing, that he be tested or put in the program. You will have to fight for it but it is worth it.. If you get him in, be sure to speak with the gifted teacher about his ADHD and work together to come up with things that can help him during school.

And, I agree with Mandy, mentoring other or younger students can help.

My son is a math master. His teacher has him help other kids with their math instead of having him sit there bored. He hates doing things over and over again, and also gets frustrated when he already knows it. He can read and comprehend with no problem, however, he hates spelling. He hates to write. If he could type everything, then the problem would be solved. I've talked to his teachers and kept an open door for ideas on how to keep his attention alive!
