These are the criteria used to make a diagnosis. Just because you and hubby have ADHD doesn't mean son WILL, but it does make him a likely candidate. Try to get him into counseling as soon as you can!

It says that 6 or more of these ADHD symptoms in each of the two sections should be seen for at least six months. These symptoms are the same for children and adults. Also the same for men, women, girls and boys.

They should be disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level.

Section 1:

Often does not give close attention to details or make careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities.

Often has trouble keeping attention on tasks or play activities.

Often does not seem to listen when spoke to directly

Often does not follow instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions).

Often has trouble organizing activities.

Often avoids, dislikes, or doesn't want to do things that take a lot of mental effort for a long period of time (such as schoolwork or homework).

Often loses things needed for tasks and activities (e.g. toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools).

Is often easily distracted.

Is often forgetful in daily activities.

Section 2:

Often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat.

Often gets up from seat when remaining in seat is expected.

Often runs about or climbs when and where it is not appropriate (adolescents or adults may feel very restless).

Often has trouble playing or enjoying leisure activities quietly.

Is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor".

Often talks excessively.

Often blurts out answers before questions have been finished.

Often has trouble waiting one's turn.

Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations (speaking and communication problems) or games).

I noticed when my daughter was 2 that she had a hard time sitting still, it was not affecting her until 2nd grade. She went downhill that year fast. I took her to her pediatrician, who spent some time with her, and knew right away she had all the symptoms. It was affecting her ability to be in school, and we started her on meds right away. He knew her since birth, and sees her every few months now. She has done fairly well, but we've had to change meds a few times. The first year she was on adderall, and we loved it, but she wasn't gaining weight, and is already too small. That has been the biggest part of it, getting the right meds. It is amazing how well she can cope on it, and she is doing well in school. I would talk to your doctor first, they are cheaper than a therapist. They will eventually tell you to get therapy, as kids with ADHD have low self esteem, but I think their own doctor works better for the meds. Good Luck to you, it is a hard thing to get used to.
