Yesterday was a very bad day. My son that is 5 years old and in grade K got another ISS. His first one was just about month ago. Now I told this school how many times now he is seeing a Child Psychologist for his behavior and next monday 10/25/2010 he is going to go get tested/evaluated fot ADHD. He not a bad kid he just does not think before he acts and he very hyper and all over the place. He can not sit still. Anyways the teacher sent him to the office and he got ISS for: Not following the directions(sit down, stop touching others, ect) Coming out of restroom with pants not all way up. Hiding under teachers desk, tables, inside cubbies. Touching other students.
Well most of this if he has ADHD is part of the problem I don't know what to do about it. There nothing I can do till I get him evaluated. As for the bathroom I asked him how his pants looked when he came out he showed me there was not body parts showing. It was like half inch down you can see his hip bones. Come on he 5 years old only potty trained a year ago. And my son always in hurry. So he must went bath room pull up most way was hurrying get back to class and he still pulling it up when he walked out bathroom. I asked him why he hiding under teacher desk. He said some kid kept making fun of him and laughing at him he didn't want hear it anymore so he trying hide from him. Yes he did get time out when he came home because he had ISS and did stuff he not to do. But there not much more can do. Then I got really mad because down here in TX I guess they have the right to paddle your kid they think they did wrong. Well I signed a paper at the begging of year saying they can't. Well they didn't hit him with it but they threatened him with it. He told me the Asst. Principal said to him and one other boy " your not to act like babies anymore if you do I going pump you." I asked him what that mean he said he going pump my butt and shows me with his hands like his but getting bigger. I said what you mean like pump with bike pump. He goes not he had this long black thing that looked like a i. Hello what looks like a i if you stand it up a paddle the hole on the handle the dot for the i. I ask does it have a handle on it he said ya. Then he said hitting his hand like if he had paddle in it. I going pump your butt. I was so mad. My son could have a problem and your threatening him with a paddle. Well I have conference with with teacher today anyway's going tell her to tell that asst. principle that my husband might be calling board of education about it and threaten is against the law. We don't raise out child like that. Plus not my son scared go to school. He says he don't like it anymore and he scared of that man. He don't want get hit. So have promise him nothing go happen other wise he not be in school right now. I am trying be strong for my son but this starting really make me sick. I have anxiety as it is I been having panic attacks at least 3 times a week if not more. I just so mad.....

I am SO SORRY you are dealing with this!!!

First, ISS for a 5 year old Kindergartener is RIDICULOUS. Second, you have been honest with the school that there may be a behavioral health problem here and you are in process of having this assessed. Third, WHAT is this man doing threatening your son with a paddle - especially if you have said NO THANK YOU to physical punishment.

I would be having panic attacks, too.

Is private kindergarten an option? If not, are there other resources in school district with which you could raise some heck? School Counselors, etc.?

My son's school started doing things without my permission like having a psych in his class assessing him...I was livid, as I had already told him I was working on this privately. I wanted an assessment done (which our behavioral psych did use several questionarres from school staff, so their input was certainly utilized).

Knowing my son and his disconnection with cause and effect of his adhd behaviors (ESPECIALLY at age 5! but still today at age 9 when unmedicated) and his co-existing anxiety - coming at him with a loud voice, or with threats, or scaring him with physical discipline, or a delayed discipline such as ISS would be totally useless and actually ESCALATE his poor behavior.

((((((((((((hugs))))))))))) You sound like an awesome, loving mommy. Keep fighting for your son. Also, get help for your anxiety if you need it (I can relate to that - I struggle with anxiety and panic). If I were in your shoes my priorities would probably be 1. get son assessed (and during that process do whatever you can to get the school staff to practice patience) 2. work towards assistance for him (whether that be meds, therapy, supplements, some or all of these things - may be an adventure to find the right approach) 3. I would also be looking to how you can get him into a more loving and supportive environment - either a change of school or make a STINK with your district to get the support he needs.

Again, be sure you take care of you.

Diana,

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I'm in NY and things are soo different here- teachers cannot touch or threaten a child. This is so horrible- I hope you work things out. They should have a little more patience with him until all the evaluations are done. There is so reason for a child to be afraid to go to school.

I help Moms in your situation evaluate a holistic apporach to behavioral/learning dissablitlies. Would you be interested in looking at this option?
