My son has had the worst week of his life, I'm pretty sure. We started him on Concerta last week. It's supposed to be the lowest stimulant out there (that's what the doctor says). He was awful!!! Anxious, angry, sleeping problems, violent at times. In fact, he tried to hit his teacher yesterday, because he wanted to do center times longer... now, he's kicked out of school until after winter break. He is heart broken, as today is the valentine's day party that he's been waiting for all week. This morning he looked at me and said "mom, even though I'm naughty all the time do I still get to give my friends their cards. Because I love them, mom!" It broke my heart! I'm so mad at the school! It's because he was on the wrong medication, but nobody sees that, or cared all week. They just kept sending him down the the principles office. So, we're taking him off stimulants and putting him on something called clondedine (I think that's how you spell it). It's a blood pressure pill to calm you down. I'm scared about it but we'll see.

Anybody have any words of encouragement? I seriously want to find a support group to join in my town. The school has no program for ADHD children, so they say there is nothing they can do for him. I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle. I feel like the entire school is against me and it's a huge district!

I'm just looking for a little support right now.

That just brakes my heart to hear your story, because it wasn't that long ago that I was the one telling a similar story. My son had, had about 4 suspensions when he was in kindergarten. After starting Quentin on Concerta he is doing alot better, also after 1st grade we switched schools which also helped a great deal. I think that sometimes when a school has the idea that your child is bad or out of control, they always seem to blame that child when something happends. Quentin is now ending 3rd grade and everything has seemed to be better for him. I used to cry until I couldn't cry no more. I also felt like the school was blaming me for being a bad parent even though I was trying everything in my power to help him. Please just keep your head up everything will work it's self!!! Good Luck to you

hi  robyn,

i went through the same thing with my son .. he got kicked out of pre school and his kindergarden and frist grade and half of 2ed were compleate nightmares!!

half way through the 2ed grade how ever lots of prayers got answered here is what workd for me....

i got a diagnosis from the dr of his adhd and took it to the school they sat down with me and we had a case confrence to develop a iep plan .....

we also got into the riley childrens hospitol and they got him on the right meds ( this was after a year of councling only and about 8 moths trying meds from his dr he had been on stritara wich did not work for him and daytrana , a patch which works for some but not for him) the children's hospitol put him on aderol this has to be adjusted as he grows / gains weight but it works well for him

the school if you live in a no child left behind state must work with you as your child has the right to an education and kicking him out when he has a diagnosis on file for what you discribed is not leagle but you have to get the diagnosis on file after that then you and the school can set up limits and programs he can benifit from perhaps exrta pe time to help him be able to get his energy out and a aid in the room to help him keep his attention focused and allow the teacher to teach at the speed needed for the other students too

my son is now 9 and in the 3rd grade he spends 85% of his day in a regular class room now

before he was crawling under desks not even writing his name on his paper

he would spend most of his time in the pricipal's office and all i heard for the frist few years was how horrid and difficult he was ... i knew he was a sweet boy with extra engergy and now others can see that too

hope this helps

My son was on Clonidine only to help him sleep. He was taking Adderall at the time and was developing motor tics also. He has also tried Concerta and it did nothing but cause him to lose wiehgt. He is 10 years old now and in 5th grade. He is now on Daytrana patch for school only. Mainy because his issue is impulsiveness. At home I can deal with him fine. It's matter of getting their attention and having them look you in the eye while you calmly talk to them..screaming and yelling does nothing. He was like your son and felt bad that he was in trouble and "different". I explained his medication as a vitamin to help him focus. He knows better now but at the time he was 5 or 6 when this started he was devastated.

I do my best to limit the refined sugars, preservaties and dyes in the food that he eats. He is very aware of what triggers the hyperness in him and will point out..oh mom this has red dye in it...or caffiene.

Don't let the school bully you...he deserves to be there just like any ther child and you are doing the best you can to get him help. Be carefuel withthe Clonidine it can make them zombie-like. Since he has been on the Daytrana he is like a new kid. He gets very good grades in school..got chosen to be part of the school paper and was sudent of the month recently. He is also a goalie on a travel hockey team...if that doesn't require focus I don't know what does!

Hang in there you'll find what works for him..it takes time. The most important thing is that he doesn't lose his self esteem. He may feel like the naughty child..you just have to keep telling him he is a good boy and you will help him figure out how to make life work for him.

My son started Kindergarden last year and 3 days in I had to go talk to his teacher and a week in I had to meet with his teacher and the principal and they told me I needed to take him out and wait till he was 6. I said I'll pull him out but it won't make a difference it was just how he was. I asked if they thought he had ADD but the principal said she didn't like to have kids tested because a lot of boys mature slower, to just give it a year. So I pulled him out and started teaching him at home where we could stop and take breaks when I could see him start to get frustrated. My husband really wanted me to get him tested so in Dec. we took him in and he was diagnosed and put on Focalin and the Dr. told me to put him back in school after the break with a different teacher. So I did and a week in his new teacher was telling me how attentive and great he was in class. It was amazing! And he was so much happier and excited about school. We did have to add a low dose of Ritalin at lunchtime because after a month he started having trouble in the afternoons. He is in first grade now and doing good, I talk to his teacher every couple weeks to make sure nothings changed and he's still doing okay. I don't know if this helps at all, but I know how you feel.

Sometimes, certain meds can make kids angry or more violent. I would make sure to talk to your doc or thereapist about it. There could be more to the ADHD diagnosis. I have had my son on Cencerta and he did get more angry. Then we just took him off of it. I went through the gammot of changing meds very often with my daughter and jsut didn't want my son to go through the same thing as she did. We just have different ways of dealing with him now without the meds.

Make sure to follow your gut feeling on this. Make sure it's what you want to do, not neccicarily what the docs want to do.

Also, check in with the school, this will take ALOT of time, but they can accomodate your son. First, make sure the school knows he has ADHD. Then ask the school to test him. They will do some "interventions" first. Like putting him in Title One and finding other ways to deal with him. This will be a start. It takes a few weeks to make sure the interventions are working or not. But if he has problems in school, it is your responsibility to move forward with the school and ask to be tested for learning disabilities. Now, he may not have any learning disabilities, but when they start the interventions, it may help him.

Also, I don;t know if you are aware of a group called PACER. They are here for parents who are having trouble with the schools with a child with disabilities. Search it on the internet and see what you find. You can call them and ask them anything you want and they are a big help. Also, the schools are more willing to help you if they know you ahve contacted PACER. The schools don't like PACER.

I hope this helps!

i know exactly what you are feeling. my son goes to woodbine and they have a child study team that woudl much rather you just slap some riddlin in your kid then deal with them the way they need too. and this is a small district. i am to the point that if they don't do what i request of them for him i am going to have make an appeal against them.

i do not know if your son's school has a child study team (i think all of them do ) and i am not sure if you have an I.E.P (individual education program) for your son, but if you have either of these let me know and i can give you alot of info to help out your child. i been through it and still going throught it.
