My 6 year old son has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. At first we thought he just had some "behavioral issues" so we decided to contact a child psycologist. We've been seeing this psychologist for over a year, and we've finally ruled every other option out and have come to the conclusion that he in fact does have ADHD. He is extremely smart, and is in the top of his first grade class. Academically, he has no issues. He's first to finish his work and loves to read and learn above and beyond what is expected. His issue seems to be acting out, or not having an impulse stopper. If he feels like he wants to walk out of class due to bordem, he will. Or if he feels like hitting someone, he will. He is not a mean child, and for some reason these things seem to only happen in school.
We have exhausted many options to help him with these issues, but nothing really seemed to stick. So we are now considering Ritalin as our next option. I always try NOT to give my childern medications / prescriptions. I choose to go the healthy route, with vitamins, and herbs. But this is a new phase that I am not quite sure how to handle.

Does anyone have any insight on the Ritalin and how it has affected your child?? Also, is there anyone other there that can give me a better idea on a strict diet to implement with him??

Our son is on generic ritalin and it has made a world of difference for him. It helps him focus at school and helps to reason with him.

I have to ask, if your child had diabetes or depression would you give him medication? ADHD is the same. Not everything can be controlled with diet. Sometimes you need to take medication as well. It does take time to find the right meds and doses, but that is what anyone on any medication has to deal with (I'm on anti-depressants, so eventually I'll have to tweek them). Medications do not turn kids into "zombies" unless they are being overmedicated.

My son is also 6 years old and ADHD. He was diagnosed in Janurary but is seeing a child Psychologist on June 6th due to other issues we are having... He was on Conerta but had chest pains with that and is now on Adreall XR which seems to be working :) He is also on Intuniv in the evening and has to take melatonin before he will go to bed... I have heard diets don't help but I have never tried it! Best of luck :)
