My daughter has SPD as well as ADHD. She goes to occupational therapy and they were the ones who diagnosed her with the SPD. She has also seen the child psychologist who diagnosed her with the ADHD and the anxiety.

My son has both. I work with occupational therapists so that is how I found out how to go about it. You have to get an evaluation from an OT that is certified to do a sensory disorders profile (not all are). If your child is school age you can request an MFE (Multi-factored evaluation that involves a team that will test your child- school psychologist, speech, OT, etc.) My district would not get the correctly certified OT (he did have an MFE though) so I took him to a hospital in Youngstown Ohio that had the person I was looking for and my insurance paid for it since a doctor gave me an RX for it. I found this process very informative for my son, and the school eventually complied with implementing some things for my son throughout the day (heavy lifting and other sensory activities & providing fidgets). I do think they helped but I wish I could have gotten an IEP. Instead we were working on BLATs. My son exhibited an extreme sensitivity to clothing; especially tags, chewed on his shirts all the time, he would always complain about noise when it wasn't noisey, just to name a few. Hi...Maybe you could work with your school system, they may be able to help you get the services you need to get the diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder. I have found our district to be very helpful with my grandson. Sometimes he displays symtoms of this disorder, as well as Autism. We have a diagnosis of Global Developmental Delay. My son had that when he was younger, but for the most part seems to have grown out of it, or maybe he just knows how to remove himself from the situations now. I remember going to the grocery store and we would have to leave because the fans on the freezers would be too loud for him. Groups of people would put him on overload in the matter of seconds because he would take everything in a once and couldn't process it all. My son was diagnosed by the family counselor we were seeing at the time....long before he was diagnosed with ADHD.

hi.. my son was tested through his physcial therapist. he has a Sensory Integration Disorder he's only months old. But my son also has alot of other health problems. Talk with your childs pediatrician.

There is a really good book about this it is called "The Out of Sync Child" Maybe you can borrow it from the library.

My nephew has a sensory processing disorder and he does see an Occupational Therapist, which has been working well. My sister has also done alot of reading on the disorder.
