My son has ADHD and has been on Stratterra for a while. He is so picky with his food, and he does eat, but its so little. I found out yesterday that even though it has seemed like he has been putting on weight, he has only gained 3 pounds in 3 years. She thinks it might be his anxiety that is causing this. Is/ has anyone gone thru this???? I would so love advice to know different ways to help my son!!!!

Appetite suppression is a big thing with Stratterra. Great if you're an adult (which is who it was originally marketed to), not so great unless you are an overweight kid. If his symtoms aren't so severe as to be disruptive on the weekends and evenings, I'd talk to the doctor about putting him on something that will wear off in time for him to have dinner with the family and that he can avoid taking on weekends. My ADHD son has done well with Concerta, and he doesn't have to take it at night or on weekends. The result is that over the past year he's gained about 10lbs and 6 inches in height. He was so skinny at age 10 that I was terrfied that he'd never reach 100lbs! Now he's like a 14 yr old eating machine :0)

My daughter has been on Focalin for a couple of years now. She has also been 75 lbs for about 6 months and isn't gaining weight. However, she eats everything in sight after about 6pm and even in the middle of the night. I can't tell you how many times I've woken up to find empty ice cream cartons in the fridge because she's so hungry in the middle of the night! What our doc did was write a note to the school telling them that when my daughter says she's hungry that she be allowed to eat. A lot of the problem with being in school is that there are set times for eating and if the kids miss that time they're not allowed to eat later. A doctor's note written on a prescription kinda overrides those rules. Maybe this is something that is happening with your son? Maybe he is hungry after lunch and isn't allowed to eat?

My son has been on Concerta and now is on Adderall. Appetite was severely suppressed with both. He will go 14 hours without eating. I have no easy answer for you but we basically let him eat whatever he wants when he does eat - high calorie food - and we take him off the meds on weekends and whenever he is not in school - he is doing really well in height as far as growth and his weight is in the low normal range - he is skinny, but normal.
