My son was diagnosed with a milk allergy at 6 months. He tested negative to everything else. He hasn't been himself for over a month and I thought it was a virus. But, my gut kept telling me it was allergy related. He was tested again today. He tested positive for peanut, soy, pea and pork. Does anyone have any helpful hints with dealing with multiple allergies?
I also have a non - allergic 3 year old who LOVES peanut butter

Thanks,

Patty.

Hi Patty,

I also have a son who has mutiple allergies. By his first birthday he had tested positive to milk, wheat, corn, soy, strawberries, rice, and coconut. When they went to take him off of infant formula they were going to put him on rice milk which we were told was a good alternative to cows milk however his rice allergy stopped that. There are many different options out there. There is rice milk and many different types of butters that are good, cashew and almond to name a few as long as its not an allergy to all nuts. Also a big one that we found out was to watch taking them to any fast food places because they almost always cook in vegtable oil which has soybean in it. It is hard to watch everything but the computer can become a great tool in finding out where the allergins are at. I hope all of this helps because as a mother with the same problem it is hard and I wanted all the help I could get.

Yes-definitely be careful of cross-contamination and I usually make my 3 yr old's food first (she is allergic to gluten, soy, dairy, oats, coconut and onions) and put it on the table before I start my 4 year old's meal. At night we all eat an allergy-friendly meal...so much easier to cook and just be able to relax while eating!

I always sit my children across from each other so we don't have to worry about touching each other's hands. We use a clean wash cloth after every meal, and I clean my allergic child's hands and face first.

For your 3 year old...can he still have tree nuts? There are plenty of other butters out there-cashew, almond butter are both very good. If you are staying away from tree nuts, there is always sunbutter (made from sunflower seeds).

My 2nd son is also allergic to the same things as your son and I have other children who are not, be vigilant with keeping your hands and childs hand clean after eating or handling all the foods your son is allergic too. We have not eliminated any foods from our house because of our sons allergies we have just taught our other children and caretakers to be aware of the foods they eat and clean up after eating allergy related foos.

Also, there are many foods out there now that you can find for your son that has the allergies.  Good luck.

Hi Patty,

My son was VERY similar. At about 3 mos I suspected dairy allergy, they did a blood test and it was positive. At 5 mos I took him to the allergist (he had so many issues with his skin among other things). Showed only dairy. Retested at 12 mos b/c I suspected soy and more. Well, he is allergic to dairy, soy, egg, and peanuts. I too have a 3 yr old with just a peanut allergy. It has been hard, but gets easier as I educate myself between the web (lots of useful info) and books. There's a website I found very useful - www.kidswithfoodallergies.org . Hope that helps you out somewhat. It's always going to be challenging until, hopefully, they grow out of the allgery(s). BTW, I do make most of his food from scratch and the health foods store are great! Good luck! :)
