Latex allergy?

I bought a new bottle for my son yesterday because he suddenly won't take a bottle. I used to give him one every other day just to keep him used to it, and he suddenly decided he didn't want one (I use the Medela ones that come with the pump). I was told that Playtex Drop-in's are really good, and are the most similar to a mother's breast. So I just picked up one to try it. I didn't really think about the fact that it was a latex nipple and not silicone. Well, about 30 seconds after trying to get him to use it (he still didn't take to it, just chewed on the nipple), he got an awful rash around his mouth. I took it away, and just popped the boob in his mouth instead, and it took about 30 minutes for it to start going away. It didn't seem to bother him much. He wasn't trying to itch it or anything. Nothing else seemed to swell and his breathing was fine. He's only 3 months old so I couldn't give him any benadryl.

I wouldn't give your baby any benadryl without talking to your doctor because of your child's age. It can do more harm than good. The doctors have all kinds of different approaches to handling this allergy in particular. I know all to well about this because all my kids unfortunately inherited my latex allergy. There are creams and drops that your doctor can prescribe that can help your baby out. Now you know your child has this allergy so you also need to make sure you alert any doctors or nurses before they touch your child with any gloves.
