Hey ladies! My son was born in Oct. of 07 and has always had sensitive skin. We went to a dermatolgist early on b/c of his eczema, got that under control. He still breaks out occassionaly but we have ointment that works like a charm on those trouble areas. He also has a milk allergy, though I'm confused on why he was okay on next step formula which contains cows milk but he breaks out to regular milk? I guess the formula is broken down more? Also we just learned that he has asthma. He got a virus from daycare that caused him to break out and have a fever and after that went away he got a cold and started breathing heavily. We had him taken to the emergency room this past Sun. b/c his heavy breathing scared us. We didn't know what it was. They took x-rays and he has no fluid in the lungs or a bronchi infection, but his lungs were a little too inflated the dr. said? Anyways we're on breathing treatments (I need advice on how to get him to not pass out from screaming so much from the mask) and steroids for several days. I guess I just need someone to tell me that we'll get through this and he'll eventually be able to sleep through the night again and not get SO mad at us when we have to give him his treatments. Any advice?

Hi, my older son, age 2 1/2, was recently diagnosed with asthma. We have been dealing with breathing treatments on and off for 6 months before he was diagnosed. The mask we have for him looks like a fish. We have two, so in the beginning my husband and I would wear one while we did his treatments. He did cry and fight it in the beginning, but quickly settled into the routine. Now he very willing does his breathing treatments. He only recently started wearing the mask around his head. Before that we held it or he held it. He also read his favorite books during the breathing treatments and saved them for only that time. Good luck and hang in there. It will get easier.

That's what the dr. and nurses said too. Did your son's gums ever start to bleed? I'm wondering if it's from the sucking in the meds so hard while he's crying?

It's hard to watch as a mom, but actually the best thing for him during his treatments is for him to cry. Then the Albuterol/Xopenex (med of choice) gets deeper into his lungs. My son is now 5 and loves to hold the mask himself but I remember the days of my husband and I holding him down and watching him cry for 15 minutes. It does get easier. Hang in there.
