ok, we all know that our children are blessed with the mixture of many things, but when it comes to hair, I think many parents get it all wrong! Are you comfortable with the day to day maintenance of your childs hair?? Or do you find yourself always looking for something to tame and condition? Well, I first of all want to ask...please no more vaseline in these kids hair!!! As a hairdresser, the best advice is to take your child to a salon and have the stylist recommend something. Invest in good products and dont think that your girls have to have chemically relaxrd hair to maintain managability.! There are pleanty of ways to keep natural curl healthy (www.carolsdaughter.com) -great products! At any rate...please let me know your challenges, I would love to help or simply let me know your secrets so we all can be better moms to our special kids!

Unfortunately my two were blessed with the beautiful hair but it tends to look too dry when nothing is in it, so for years now I have been using Blue Dutches Oil Moisturizer that keeps it manageable and not so dry looking. The only store that carries it is the Family Dollar Store here in Richmond,KY. My son is 17 and he manages his own hair now. The people here in town him as my son because of his long beautiful hair.

@ Sue Davis - I use the Creme of Nature shampoo with the Kinky Curly(Knots Today) conditioner. I find the creme of nature shampoo at Walmart. Have you tried looking for it there?

The Kinky Curly line of products can only be found at a Whole Foods Market and I truly HIGHLY recommend it. You won't need anything else in your hair afterwards.

Aicha...dont use a normal brush...use a wide toothed comb or a paddle brush and then spritz some anti-frizz spray into it. You could use a shampoo for wavy/curly hair that brings out the curls (defines them more). My hair is naturally curly and I use andrew collinge frizz free spray, dont need much, spritz on then run my fingers over my hair to flatten stray parts.

I am partly puerto rican and I have VERY curly hair, and my daughter is mixed and has also been blessed with VERY curly hair. I have tried MANY MANY MANY products, and have finally found a line that is absolutely awesome and it's organic. A friend of mine turned me on to the Kinky Curly line. This stuff is awesome!! I shampoo our hair and then use their conditioner (Knots Today) as a leave in....it leaves our hair super soft and wonderfully manageable. Best of all, it's organic and I'm not putting any additional products in our hair to bring out the best of our curls. I just comb through it and go! I absolutely LOVE IT!!

I can't wait until my daughter has enough hair to braid. I know it is time consuming, but you can also have fun with it by doing different designs. Just pop in a childrens movie and take breaks after a few braids. The kids get used to it and learn to just sit and let you do it, and you will get faster the more you do it. It's actually not hard to learn, you just need time and patience.

I really liked Cream of Nature shampoo for my daughter, but I can't find it anymore, so we have started using Pantene shampoo for women of color, and that seems to work pretty well. We are also using an olive oil moisurizer daily.

Hi
I have a question?
I am not sure how to care for my daughters hair her father is Moroccan and she has very curly course hair and I brush it and it puffs out all over the place what is the best way to groom her hair?

I used to let my older girl ear her hair out--not anymore. My older child has very curly hair with lots of texture and ever since I started keeping it braided most of the time (I do four braids mostly) it is so much easier to deal with! I will leave it out for pictures or special events and then it goes right back into braids. My younger girl has very fine curly hair--and I'd love some ideas for lighter weight leave in conditioners that won't just leave it looking greasy and straight.

Oh and I have tried many things (some have been mentioned above) and I have spent lots of money and I won't use it if I don't like the smell. Also, as many of you probably already know alot of the black hair care products are too heavy and the white hair care products are not enough...Mixed Chicks hair products are just right and smell great too!

My daughter has spiral curls and I wash and condition it 1-2 times a week. In the tub I take a wide tooth comb and comb the conditioner through it. When she gets out I comb it with a fine tooth comb in case there are fuzzies in it. I then part it and put Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner in it. I crunch it all up and then let her hair air dry. Her curls are soft and defined. Everyday I wet it with a spritz bottle and put more leave in conditioner and comb it with a wide toothed comb, then a fine toothed comb...a little more leave in conditioner...crunch it up...let it air dry. Hope this helps!

My girls aren't here yet, but I've heard wonderful things about Carol's Daughter as well as a company called Curls which even makes baby products. I've got mixed heritage (my great grandparents were white/black and black/Cherokee), so my hair isn't exactly normal black folk hair either. I'm so curious what kind of hair my girls will have! I just know I need to teach my husband how to braid. Are there classes for white dads on black hair?

I shampoo and condition once a week with my daughters hair. I cant stand putting vaseline in her hair as it just makes it greasy and doesnt curl at all, though her dad uses it on his hair, he has very tight curls and gets a dry scalp very easily if he doesnt use it. I use it on her dry spots tho (knees elbows etc...). I use carson-sheen baby love moisturiser once/twice a week.. her dad loves to see it out in an afro so when I do this, I just comb it out...with being mixed shes inherited quite a bit of my 'hair' genes so it doesnt need moisture everyday. When I plait her hair or have her aunty braid/cane roll it Ill run some baby love through it before hand as it tames the wild bits. I like to leave her hair out, once Ive washed it, I towel dry then spray in 'urban therapy' twisted sista 30 second curl/ringlet spray...it contains a uv filter which i find an extra bonus.
I am at the moment trying to find a nice smelling herbal shampoo that doesnt contain sodium laureth sulphate as she has excema. I reckon I can care for her hair pretty well, and my mother in law tells me each week how lovely her hair looks and that Im doing really well getting to grips with hair styles...though yes I cant brais myself...i just cant do french plaits! never have been able to and honestly dont think my fingers will ever let me :)

I wish I knew how to braid, then it would be a lot easier to deal with my son's hair. His grandma braided his hair once for school pictures but they didnt even stay in fully for the car ride home, let alone through the night. When I let the curls grow (mostly in winter) I use Ultra Hydrating Envia shampoo and conditioner from melaleuca.com. I let the conditioner sit for as long as possible, and comb his hair while it's still in there (lots less tangles and crying that way). I also use curling custard from kinky-curly.com to help keep his curls intact. I bought a jar of it well over a year ago and still have a lot left, so you don't need to use much. I've also heard products from miss jessie's work wonders but havent been able to try. Maybe because it wasn't organic like the other kind we had used before, but oil sheen got in his eye 1 day and boy was he screaming! I felt so bad :-( Hope this helped and I look forward to some new tips to try.

From personal experience combing hair only when wet and adding a water based moisturiser is best for mixed curly hair. Grease and vaseline apparently blocks pores and stopes growth, triming mixed hair regularly is also good as ends become dry quicker. Also a good contidioning shampoo, creamy in texture and a good conditioner is very important.
